Storyline

Ruth bumps into Margaret and berates her for being an unloving mother to Martin; but, even Margaret, like Louisa, is concerned that Martin seems withdrawn and unwell. He attends the school prize giving, but his curt manner ends with him stomping off, and Louisa, running after him, is hit by a car and hospitalized. Visiting her, Martin is concerned that she may have an embolism, but is shocked when she announces she wants to take James for a break with her mother Eleanor in Spain. Military policemen visit Port Wenn, looking for Mike, an Army deserter. He is prepared for a life on the run, but Martin persuades him that things will go better for him if he gives himself up. Quotes

Ruth Ellingham: [At a café table] But it isn't your pilfering and your petty meanness that I care about. It's the damage that you can still inflict on Martin.
Margaret Ellingham: Well, I don't have to stay here to listen to this.
Ruth Ellingham: Go home, Margaret.
Margaret Ellingham: [Ready to leave alone] I am Martin's mother. I have every right to be here. You've never had children. You can't possibly understand what you're talking about.
Ruth Ellingham: Don't forget your grandson!

Aside from Penhale's annoying antics, a decent episode.

For much of seasons five and six, Louisa and Martin have had a very difficult time balancing their careers with a baby. They've gone through several baby sitters and FINALLY have found one who is ideal...Mike. However, the obsessive-compulsive guy has a secret and this episode introduces it--he's NOT an army vet but is supposed to be active army but has gone AWOL! Much of the show consists of him hiding and PC Penhale behaving like a buffoon (too much at times). Additional plots involve Martin's mother sowing discord simply because she's such a cold and nasty creature as well as Martin's concern that perhaps Louisa is VERY ill and doesn't know it. However, he needs to hurry in addressing it, as she's just announced that she's leaving for a time to think and reassess the marriage. So, she's leaving the emotionally cold Doc and going to stay with her emotionally cold mother in Spain!

I am knocking a point off this one simply because as the series progresses, PC Penhale's stupidity gets worse and more annoying. He is simply the stupidest cop in history--too much so. Apart from this, a very good show.
