Storyline

Campbell admits to kerb crawling but claims to have met Kyle in the arcade by chance and sent him home whilst the dead boy is named as Andre Petri, who died of a heroin overdose and lived near the Heaths. His sister tells Annie that she was amazed how flush he was and it turns out that the arcade was the recruiting ground for under-age drug dealers. Banks suspects the leader is Chivers, a cab driver with previous convictions, who has disappeared with a female accomplice but Helen believes that Katy is not so innocent and is involved with Chivers to get Paul to pay a ransom which he will share with her. Annie shadows Paul as he delivers the money but loses him. Eventually Banks catches up with Chivers and finds that things are not as they first appeared to be. Written by don @ minifie-1

Gripping season 3 opener of DCI Banks
4 November 2016 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

This review relates to parts 1 and 2 of this impressive season 3 opener of DCI Banks, a show which is must-see TV.

One aspect of DCI Banks I love is the rolling greens of the Yorkshire Dales, and the opening scene has DCI Banks (Stephen "Drop the Dead Donkey" Tompkinson) hosting a barbecue for his colleagues at his lovely place in the Dales. DS Annie Cabbot turns up with her newborn, and it's obvious there's tension between her and DI Helen Morton (Caroline "Doc Martin" Catz).

I haven't read the novel, but all credit to the creator/author and scriptwriter for their impressive work and the twist at the end which completely upended the motives of Jimmy Chivers (Geoff Bell in an incredible performance) and Paul Cain (John Lightbody, who was in a couple of Midsomer Murder episodes). I never saw the ending coming and it imparted a greater sense of morality amidst the drug scene.

We see DCI Banks having a paternalistic attitude to DS Cabbot's return from maternity leave, and also DS Cabbot's travails with her eldest son who is facing expulsion from school for being a bookmaker. DS Cabbot also attempts (sort of contrived) to bond with Katy Heath (Christine Bottomley) make the viewer squirm and sort of makes things worse.
