Satyrs, here depicted as savage ape-like creatures who serve the maenads, were fertility spirits often seen drinking, dancing and playing music with Dionysus. They were animal-like men who had horse tails and assine ears. The goat-legged, horned satyrs that are most commonly known today were called Panes.
