A straight-laced Paskistani-American student is off to a must-attend party on a Friday night. His only available transportation being his father's taxi cab, he sets off into Manhattan. But his party-going plans are quickly forgotten when a mysterious young woman jumps aboard in need of a ride. Charmed by her intense intrigue and good looks, the young man gets swept up by her pressures. After a mind-altering night of drugs and passion, the woman is dead, and the young man finds himself in the cross hairs of a gruesome murder investigation, panicked and shaken, but possibly with a trace of doubt as to his own innocence. When the detectives are investigating the crime scene (at around 44 mins), there is a close-up of Andrea Cornish's driver's license. Legible on the bottom right of the license is the date 8-28-89, presumably Cornish's birth date. However, the show takes place in October 2014 and Andrea Stone is supposed to be 22 years old. The math doesn't add up until one remembers that the show was originally to air in 2013 (and probably take place in 2011) but was delayed when James Gandolfini, who played Jack Stone in the _Unaired 2013 Pilot_ qv, died.

Similarly, but somewhat less interesting, on a real New York driver's license the location (bottom right) of this presumed birth date would be the expiration date. But "6-28-89" wouldn't make sense for that either. See more »

Brimming with tension
13 July 2016 | by (Rawalpindi, Pakistan) – See all my reviews

The Beach is an excellent episode of what promises to be a stellar TV series. It is brimming with sustained tension ever since Naz gets in the cab to go to a party. This is the reason why the unconventional runtime feels like a fleeting occurrence. Not for one second do you get the notion that you are forcibly sitting through the episode.

The characters are also very well-drawn out and any Pakistani\Indian can directly relate to those on Naz's side of affairs. Furthermore, other characters aren't shallow as well with Detective Box and the eccentric lawyer, John Stone, leading the pack in terms of character depth.

Barring the long wait before the release of the second episode, this series is shaping up to be great a whodunit. Needless to say, HBO delivers again.
