Wanted to like it.

I wanted to like it. I thought the premise was a great one for a movie but the execution was all wrong and it made me feel as if I were on a bad acid trip instead.

Weird and wonderful psychedelic journey
kay_rock25 September 2018
This is definitely an art project. It is also definitely a "love it" or "hate it" type of film. I don't think too many people will fall into the middle.

The gentleman who made is was very good at finding talented cast, because poor acting might have destroyed this fragile project. He is also an excellent cinematographer and film editor (the latter of which is often death for indie films. Editing is art and too few really do it well).

As some of the negative reviewers have pointed out, this isn't a heavily plot driven film. There is definitely a story, but this is more character and social commentary than it is a simple act 1 act 2 act 3 type of film.

The visuals are gorgeous. A little bit psychedelic and sometimes a little grating, but really well done. Set designs were sometimes awe-inspiring.

If I had one criticism it is the sound. Some of the effects are way over the top. I realize everyone has different tolerance levels but for me some of the screeching sounds hit at a level somewhere below "Please call an ambulance, I've just had an aneurism" and just over "Can you check my ears and see if they are actually bleeding?" So if you're watching this at home, keep the remote handy.

If you enjoy film as art and don't mind violence, you might love this. There were moments I cringed and moments I laughed out loud (and some of them were even probably the correct moments for those reactions). I grinned a lot.

Applause.

A visually unique film about a very messed up woman
jtindahouse30 December 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I once read a list of the 100 greatest characters of all time in Empire Magazine and one thing they explicitly pointed out was that there were only 6 female characters on the entire list. Quite an incredible fact. The point is that it is very hard to make a memorable and compelling lead female character. 'Like Me' takes a crack at it though and does a pretty decent job I thought.

This is a very strange film in a lot of ways. The first thing you'll notice is the colour of the film. Red, blue and purple everywhere. It actually makes for a really beautiful film. The wallpapers in the film, the room designs and certain shots (like the one you'll find on the poster) are all unique and aesthetically pleasing to look at too. It's clear Robert Mockler has an excellent eye for visuals.

'Like Me' starts out with an excellent opening scene that had me glued to the screen needing to know what was going to happen. It then delves into some very dark and strange paths. This is a the story of a very messed up girl, that much is clear. Possibly the thing I liked most about the film though was the ending (SPOILERS) where she tracks down one of her online critics and confronts him only to find out that he is a coward in real life. This spoke volumes to me. The amount of the "keyboard warriors" there are in the world who are incredibly tough from the comfort of their bedroom, yet in real life are pathetic cowards are plentiful. 'Like Me' is a great debut effort from Robert Mockler and as long as he continues to improve he could be something special for the future.

Just Don't
cmplascencia2 November 2020
I just wasted 1 hour, 23 minutes, and 56 seconds of my life waiting for something to happen. Do yourself a favor, if you plan on watching this movie, get yourself in a psychedelic frame of mind first. I gave it a 2 instead of a 1 for the colors and visuals. Pretentious with no substance.

The Doomed Generation..
alexqueens13 November 2019
And to think I was going to avoid this based on some early keywords that I'd heard based on its premise, e.g. troubled teen, social media broadcast, millennial trash, and other such things that make me groan. And yet, what awaited me was one of the highlights of the year.

It's certainly not going to be everyone's favorite biscuit, especially for those who place things like 'plot' above all else. I'll happily admit that this lacks a traditional plot, focusing instead on an extended circumstance that quickly gets out of hand, and the overall disturbing mental stability of a young woman getting an adrenaline kick from doing bad things. But where this excels is in its stylised editing, the color palettes (and some sweet neon that tickles my fancy), great performances and a bleak insight into the sad reality of many teens and adults today.

Robert Mockler's debut came out of nowhere and in many ways, it resembles a contemporary version of Gregg Araki's The Doom Generation (1995); where even the premise is coincidentally similar. Except in this case, the descent into violence and the macabre is fuelled by social media; such as content-reaction videos, internet infamy and hate trolls. But the base ingredient seldom changes; that being of the instability of certain young people whose boredom and apathy venture into a twisted game of hurting others to feel something more; adrenaline, empowerment, invincibility, etc. And in many cases, simply because they can, with the lives of others carrying little to no merit in their eyes. The stunning Addison Timlin plays this character brilliantly - a tomboyish emo teen - despite her 26 years of age when this movie was shot.

Almost every shot is a beautiful picture (despite the often gruesome content) and the mood accompanies the style of the movie perfectly. An arthouse acid trip of a movie that hits all my pretty buttons. *The ideal after-midnight movie.

Interesting Arthouse Look at our Society
Reviews_of_the_Dead7 January 2019
This was a film that I heard about on a couple of podcasts I listen to regularly. I wrote this one down on my to-see list and by the time that I got to it as part of my round up for the year, I couldn't remember anything about it. Ideally this is how I go into every film to be honest. The official synopsis for this film is a young woman sets out on a crime spree that she broadcasts on social media.

The first thing I wanted to touch on for this film was that it really is socially relevant. I am somewhat guilty of what this film is trying to get across as a blogger who posts movie reviews and contributes to podcasts on a fairly regular basis. The older I've gotten I've been faced with what is my purpose in this world and I don't want to be forgotten when I'm finally gone. I know this is kind of me opening up here and getting a little bit deep, but I think it is relevant to this film.

We kick this film off as a car pulls into a drive-through store. I believe the man working is Freddie (Jeremy Gardner). He asks what the person driving wants and they say milk. The person then gets out of the car and goes around to the other door, wearing a mask. They are filming and at first Freddie plays along. Things take a turn though when the person who is masked pulls a gun. This causes Freddie to beg for his life and piss himself. The person loses their gun and then flees back to their car.

The person under the mask is Kiya (Addison Timlin). They upload the video to the internet and then are looking at all the views/comments they get. There are a ton of reaction videos, but one really hits her. It is from Burt (Ian Nelson), who calls her out. This forces her to step up the things that she does, which brings her to a hotel with Marshall (Larry Fessenden). She lures him to her room, where she ties him up and forces him to eat until he pukes. She uploads this and gets another harsh reaction from Burt. She kidnaps Marshall and opens up to him.

She then has to decide how far she will go to become socially relevant in the eyes of the internet.

Getting back to my point that I was stating earlier is that this film makes a lot of sense in today's society. Many of us, including me, are so concerned with getting our works out there to share. I'm not saying that it is a bad thing; it actually is a good thing for the most part. The problem though is when you go too far like Kiya. It is even worse as well when you are doing things for everyone's approval which I don't like. Even Marshall's character is doing it to an extent. There is an interesting scene where the two of them open up to each other and Marshall explains that he painted all of the rooms in his hotel. He does them in weird ways, which I just took as his way of expressing himself. He didn't do it for fame, but his way of coping with his life and the tragedy he experienced. In this case, it is similar to me and why I do the reviews I do.

On the other side, we see the dark side of the internet in the form of Kiya. She will go to whatever lengths she can to become popular. This scares me, because this isn't too dissimilar to the mass shootings we see. She is as mentally unstable as many of them and trying to get her 15 minutes of fame. I truly believe that is partially why some of the mass shootings happen. These people do not see any difference between being famous or infamous and glorifying what they do on the news, even if it is negative is what they are going for.

The final angle I want to touch on for this is the Burt character. He is kind of a negative, internet troll. He is pointing out the truth of Kiya's character. The interesting thing though is what happens to him at the end of the film. He is kind of a 'keyboard cowboy' and we see his true character when he is confronted offline. Even though he pushes Kiya to do some of the horrific things she does, I do like the fitting end he gets as well.

I do have to say that the pacing of the film is good. The film only runs 80 minutes and it really flies by. The problem that really comes for this film is that it is arthouse. I don't mean that in a bad way, but it really doesn't form a coherent story. It is more of a film that you have to experience and its deeper meaning is more important than the story itself. Some things are shown allegorically with images from cartoons and flashes of things as well. I did enjoy this aspect, but I do wish we would have gotten more of coherence around it. The ending is somewhat satisfying though, I will give it credit there.

The acting was something that I really enjoyed. Timlin I thought did a great job at embodying the character she is. I felt it was quite believable and she has cuteness to her. I bring this up, because she uses it to her advantage. If this was a male lead, he couldn't do some of the things she does. I thought it really helps this film. Nelson I thought was fine in the role he played. He commands the videos that drive Kiya. Fessenden is great and such a legend in these indie films. Gardner I thought was solid in the role he played as well. The rest of the cast round out the film for what they needed.

Effects for this film were quite amazing as well. We don't get effects in the way of blood or gore. We do get some horrible things happening to Marshall that looked extremely real. The real effects for the film come from the images we get. The colors are vivid and amazing. It really had a feel of like Suspiria or Neon Demon in the vivid colors and the images that are presented. In all I would say that this film looks amazingly beautiful.

The score of the film was something that was also fitting. When we are getting this montage like sequences, we are getting loud, dubstep type music, which is fitting. It really builds on that surreal feel that it was going for. I do think that the musical selections definitely fit the film for what they needed. It isn't a score I will listen to regularly though.

Now with that said, this film isn't going to be for everyone. It isn't the most horrific film out there, but it definitely carries some important elements of the genre. I think the concept of the film and their deeper meanings are amazing for this day and age. The acting that couples with it is great as well. I would have liked to have a story that meshed together better, but being the arthouse style film, I can't hold it against it too much. The effects and soundtrack were great in building the surreal feel that the film was going for. If you want to see an indie film that really looks at where our society and its infatuation with social media, I'd definitely recommend giving this one a viewing.

What was that?
jmat4027 February 2020
I looked at the list of movies Addison Timlin has been in and I've seen quite a few of them but I had no idea who she was. That doesn't say much about her as an actress. "Like Me" while it has its moments, all in all, is a crap movie that I couldn't wait to be over. It could have and should have been much better. Kiya is a very disturbed character who deserved bad things to happen to her.

Poorly executed imitation of directors who made transition from mediocre... 3 stars for cute colors)Otherwise it is an absolute refuse... Pitiful self indulgent imitation of Gaspar Noé ... At 1 hour this "film"was about 59 minutes too long...Advice for director:look for ma job like house painter, you have a knack for mixing colors ...

Absolute trash.
webmaster-110030 March 2018
Apparently this movie was directed, produced, written, edited etc. by the same guy. And it's his first credit on iMDB. So it's not super surprising that it's utter garbage.

There is no plot. The film revolves around a woman that drives around and randomly tortures people for no reason. The end.

Addison Timlin is a beautiful woman, and a really good actress. Sadly, at least 90% of her movies are crap. I really hope she finds a better agent some day. Aside from a short stint on Californication, her career hasn't exactly been a stunning success.

This gross, boring, stupid and pointless movie, in which she is the only main character, will not exactly get her a nod with The Academy.

This is hardly "art"
crackedstuff3 May 2021
As a millennial myself I feel ashamed when such stupid and dull-minded content gets created. Watching this movie is like being inside the typical mind of a late 2010s millennial. The movie desperately wants to mimic surrealism and post-modernist art, but ultimately fails to. Unfortunately, awful millennial-made movies like this one come a dime a dozen these days.

A Beautiful Ride Through The Weird & The Twisted
leonardshelby17-14 April 2018
If you love the trailer, this movie is for you. The main character is fascinating and unpredictable. The story is bizarre and full of surreal moments. Almost every shot in the film is a beautiful work of art. It's perfection is even more impressive when I learned its from a first time director. I can't recommend it enough.

INSANE MOVIE!
Mr-Player_Noob30 March 2018
Yeah, this is the insane movie. but i very enjoyable this movie so much. the story about some girl who likes to troll or prank the people and edited into the viral clips turn horror-thriller genre when her kidnapped people, torture him and make him to like you.

Addison Timlin is the queen, she gave many amazing performance in this movie. and i very loved this movie because the director used the many hallucination images edited in the many scenes like Natural Born Killers or Darling.

Neon supreme
jackladon16 April 2021
The premise of this movie made me very hesitant, but after giving it a go, it shocked me with how cool and original it was. The camera work is phenomenal (which inventive sequences / trippy drug montages) and the story does NOT go how you would expect. The reviewers who didn't like this movie clearly did not grasp all the symbolism laden throughout. Basically, a runaway sees that she can achieve attention/validation through social media, and thinks this will be a fun way to spend her time - when she ups the ante and takes a hostage, things spiral way out of control, and the 'antagonist' proves to be a much more complicated person than originally displayed. This paradigm shifts even further as her descent into psychodelic madness spins out of control. Wish I had watched this on a bigger screen, that's how sumptuous the colors are. Really a visceral viewing experience.

The more time passes the more I realize that this film was ahead of it's time
theneisinfinie21 August 2021
From the themes of isolation, loneliness, the social media feedback loop and it's subversion of expections to it's internet-esque editing and sliced up storyline it doesn't surprise me that this film is polarizing. This isn't even a case of telling a familiar story in a new way. This is a totally different beast altogether. Unlike many people I think the story is pretty straight forward. The ending might take a little bit of thinking to wrap your head around but it's actually really meaningful once you understand it. As for the "cringy" vlogger guy I think people's reaction to him is ridiculous. There's LOADS of people out there who do exactly that everyday. Why is it cringy to showcase it in a movie centered around the internet? This may turn into a cult-classic as time goes on. I saw it 4 years ago and I still can't stop thinking about it. I really hope the director comes through with something else. If not at least we got this masterpiece.
