1.45: Taurus Tornado by Lenelle Moïse: A great character that is delivered really well and speaks of a lot
Some of my favorite films in the My America series have been character driven; often the shorts can give you a whole world and experience trough one person, when that one person is really well drawn and created. That is the case with Moïse's contribution, because we have an older African-American woman who is fiercely proud of not only who she is, but where she came from in terms of her own roots and family. We join her in discussion with an unseen man who we gather has probably come to move her from her home for some reason. The response from the woman is the monologue – not only her indignation at the request (requirement?) but more her reasons for the same.
There is a great character at the core here because not only does this self-professed Tornado have energy, but she has history and pride in it. To go along with it she has a great sense of language and theatrics, which of course are delivered by the writer in a script that is engaging, informative and very much a picture of a great character/people. I loved the detail in the words, the energy in them, but also the phrasing of it as a monologue. Actress Berry clearly also appreciates the script since she delivers it with such passion and accuracy that it is easy to forget that it is a performance. Although it is not delivered in one take, and does contain at least one odd edit that I didn't care for, it feels seamless and in full flow thanks to the writing and to the performance.
It speaks to roots, speaks to history, to family, and to those things in modern life that would threaten those things – and it does all of this within a very well written and delivered character. Great short film from page to performance.
