Nikki and Jack , joined by the apparently decent Dr Jenkins, unearth more bodies, leading to Niall being rearrested. Steve Boyd reports girlfriend Sarah missing, revealing to Jack what she had told him about her previous ordeal, whilst Jason Ross admits to Nikki he called her in because he felt that in the past Jenkins had colluded with Mac Neil and Laing to falsify evidence. In fact Jenkins confesses to Nikki that he had been forced to lie because Laing spent most of his time covering for loose cannon MacNeil and needed his help. The pathologists return to the Manhattan and learn that almost all the victims had worked there, including, very briefly, Sarah. As a result Stella makes a phone call to Laing regarding her son Jerome. Laing finally confesses to Nikki, Jack and DS Ross about his relationship with Stella, which consequently leads to them finding Sarah and identifying the serial killer. Written by don @ minifie-1

A killer in a Highland forest
17 January 2014 | by (United Kingdom) – See all my reviews

This two part story sees Nikki and Jack heading to the Highlands of Scotland when a woman's body is discovered by a group of hunters. She has been shot and it soon looks like an open and shut case as the bullet's makings suggest it was made by the same device as the deer killed by the hunters. The man who made it is known to the police as they believe he murdered his abusive father many years before but couldn't prove it. The only clue to the woman's identity is a matchbook which leads them to a strip club in a nearby city where they find the local police less than welcoming. Meanwhile we learn that another woman nearly died the same way when she tells her husband how she was kidnapped, raped and almost killed a few years previously… it looks as though there might be a serial killer at work.

The above précis was based on watching the first episode to avoid giving away any important details about the killer. Now, having watched the whole story I can say I found it to be the best of the current series to date… of course that might have been helped by the spectacular Highland scenery! As well as the 'official suspect', who in the way of such dramas is always innocent, there were other possibilities to keep the viewer guessing; these included two police officers; one who seemed to have a temper and another who seemed determined to see the prime suspect charged and even planted evidence. As one might expect there were some fairly grisly moments, including a close up of a large maggot infested wound, which might upset some viewers. The story was fairly tense, especially as it approached its conclusion.
