Parents Guide for
Pride (2014/I) More at IMDbPro »

The content of this page was created directly by users and has not been screened or verified by IMDb staff.
Since the beliefs that parents want to instill in their children can vary greatly, we ask that, instead of adding your personal opinions about what is right or wrong in a film, you use this feature to help parents make informed viewing decisions by describing the facts of relevant scenes in the title for each one of the different categories: Sex and Nudity, Violence and Gore, Profanity, Alcohol/Drugs/Smoking, and Frightening/Intense Scenes.

Sex & Nudity

2/10 Apart from sexual references (straight, gay and lesbian) less than would be seen at the beach, but for the pedantic.

Some men wearing small sexualised clothes in a dance club.

A woman pulls an unrealistic dildo out of a drawer and says "What's this?" before collapsing into laughter.

A group of women look at a gay porn magazine: A man wearing very small leather garments. The base of his penis is very briefly visible.

Violence & Gore

4/10

A brick and some fireworks are thrown in through a window in a gay bookshop, frightening but not seriously harming the people inside.

A woman launches herself at another woman in anger, but is restrained.

A man is strongly implied to have been beaten in a homophobic attack; he survives but is hospitalized. There are injuries to his face.

There is some brief footage of police clashing with crowds during the Miner's Strike of 1984-5

Profanity

5/10

About 6 F-words, a couple uses of "shit", and scattered utterance of "faggot". The term "dyke" is used in reclamation by lesbian women throughout the film.

5/10

Alcohol is consumed socially at pubs and other venues throughout the film, although no one is shown to get very drunk.

There are several scenes of people smoking, including smoking indoors.

A man smokes what looks like a spliff but might be a cigarette whilst discussing AIDS with a woman, outside of the hospital where his partner is being treated after a violent homophobic attack.

6/10

Although not a main theme of the film, the AIDS crisis hangs over the characters as a frightening presence.

A man approaches another man and strongly implies he does not expect to live; he sounds suicidal but it is implied that he is in fact HIV positive and dying of AIDS. He kisses the other man and says goodbye to him. The other man is obviously distressed and frightened.

A man is followed on his way home by another man who says he just wants to talk to him; we later find out that he was beaten up severely enough to end up in hospital for a long period of time in a homophobic attack.

A man is shown to have been injured.

A boy is rejected after his family finds out he is gay. His father shouts and his mother cries.

A man is revealed to have HIV and to have lived with it long enough that it is surprising he is still alive.

The end credits reveal that one of the main characters died shortly after, and very young, of AIDS related complications.

The film contains several very moving speeches.

25/50 - Recommended for 14+. In all honesty, despite a few more F-words than the MPAA allows, Pride is more deserving of a PG-13 rating for "mature thematic material including sexual content and drug/alcohol use, and for brief strong language."
