As usual, Louisa is trying to get Martin to be a nicer person--and as usual it doesn't work out well. As part of his efforts to be nicer, Martin invites Dennis Dodd (one of Louisa's bosses) over for dinner. But he didn't tell Louisa and she cannot stand Dennis. Oddly enough, while Martin is a terrible host, in the end it's Louisa that turns out to be the abrasive one and offends Dennis.
Along the same vein, Ruth does a guest appearance on a local radio program and the pathetic Police Constable calls in and begins talking about his personal life--but it's NOT that sort of show! Later, Ruth sees PC Penhale and gives him some advice, as she knows it was he who called the station. Unfortunately, like Martin's case, Penhale's efforts to be nice just backfire.
A few other plots that come up in this one include the Ellingham's difficulties with getting a good sitter, the strange solution they come up with as well as a patient with a disease that is hidden by the man's drinking.
Overall, this is a pretty typical sort of episode for the series-- well written, quirky and fun.
