Awakening and Rebirth
tiago-f-machado24 January 2014
This series takes us through suburban city life in 80's Portugal. In a country that just came straight out of a military revolution, in a very fragile economical situation and essentially still stuck in the past, we follow the lives of 3 young men who want to change mentalities. They form a revolutionary rock band and, absorbing the style and examples of both the US and Western Europe, who at the time were at least 20 years ahead, they will shake everything in its past. An amazingly creative and rhythmical period piece, where everything feels as vintage as it should. A true work of rebellion and ambition that everyone, regardless of their nationality, should see.

One of all time's best Portuguese TV series

Warning: Spoilers
This TV series was directed as if it was a movie. The cast was well selected and above all they got everything right in it: the cars, the clothes and the set. In the whole series I only found a factual mistake: when the band was going to record their first album, Cristóvão Campos's character said "we are going to record a CD (...)" Though music CDs started being recorded in the 80's (about 82 or 83), the Barões' first record had to be a vinyl one (a single or a LP) because Portugal was facing an economical crisis and there were (at least until the first years of the 90's) few people that owned CD players. The soundtrack of the series really takes us back to that era, not just the Portuguese bands, but every single song reflected what was going on in the music scene and what Portuguese people listened during the 80's:

  • Joy Division; Led Zeppelin; Rolling Stones; The Doors; Ramones; Pretenders and all the Portuguese 80's bands. The plot was well developed and as we all were expecting for an open ending which lead to a second season, we must accept the one they've created because it really gives a closure to the story. I loved Ivo Canelas's character he is excellent in every single role he plays. For those who never watched the series, it's available free for watching on the Portuguese website RTPplay, the website of the Portuguese TV station RTP. Why don't you go over there and give it a try?
