Now dismissed from UCOS Brian is persuaded by Esther to help her friend Margaret Kirby find her brother Peter Sale, who disappeared six years earlier. In the mean time Brian is bothered by journalist Maxine Wilson, whom he believes has been sent by Embleton to discredit him, and needs Strickland's help to get rid of her. Brian visits Jonathan Epstein, jailed for killing his wife Florence for her money, along with his girlfriend Annabel, who seemingly disappeared with the cash. Sale was Epstein's accountant but Epstein does not know his whereabouts and after the visit Brian is attacked. Accompanied by Esther, Brian sets out to find clues to locate Sale, in the process crossing paths with UCOS, who are investigating a con artist with links to Epstein. Eventually Sale is found and, before parting company with UCOS, Brian discovers that somebody is an impostor and Esther has to save him from being killed by them. Written by don @ minifie-1

Brian Lane: I think I'll be all right with this, you know. If this is the way it has to be... well, I'll be able so see a bit more of Mark, and the baby of course.

Brian Lane: Go on, into your basket. When he or she comes along. I'll be able to hold my head up high knowing I've done the right thing, like what's-his-name... Serpico.

Brian's last case
20 August 2013 | by (United Kingdom) – See all my reviews

Ten series in and it is time for Brian to depart the show; having been suspended at the end of the previous episode he finds himself being asked to find the brother of Esther's new friend Margaret. He accepts not expecting to find himself caught up in a case that will find him coming into contact with his erstwhile colleagues from UCOS. It appears Margaret's brother wasn't quite as honest as she believed; in fact he may have been involved in a murder and when Brian finds a former contact of Margaret's brother he is dead and Brian is attacked. This leads to him meeting UCOS again; they had just been given a tip off suggesting the dead man was in fact a wanted con man… surely it can't be a coincidence that Brian goes looking for the man just before UCOS are tipped off about him? While all this is going on Brian also has to deal with a journalist who is camped outside his house asking him questions about the reliability of some of his old cases; it would appear that somebody wants to discredit him.

It is sad to see Brian leave the series as Alun Armstrong did such a good job bringing this eccentric character to life without him becoming a parody; still it is good that he got to have such an enjoyable final episode… the scene where he armed himself with a staple gun was priceless! With Brian going it is inevitable that we won't see Esther again either; Susan Jameson did a fine job as this most understanding of women. While this was Brian and Esther's episode that doesn't mean the rest of the regulars didn't contribute although they did have a smaller role than usual. The case itself was suitably convoluted and finished with a nice twist and a conclusion that was surprisingly tense… knowing that Brian was leaving I feared he was about to be killed off! The series won't be the same without Brian; I just hope it can survive his departure without changing too much.
