Created by Peer Gopfrich and Amir Reichart, Phoenix 9 is a 20 minute short that impresses in some technical aspects. The production and costume designs are well done. The world feels lived in and real. Some of the sound mixing lets it down as is the case with many lower budget shorts, but it's worth checking out if you're interested in short form science fiction.

Testing the waters for reactions to ideas and concepts for feature films gets easier all the time for aspiring filmmakers around the world. With access to an array of filmmaking tools combined with multiple venues by which to share your ideas we're seeing new talent all the time. Case in point, German filmmaking duo Peer Gopfrich and Amir Reichart, and their short film Phoenix 9. Gopfrich wrote and produced Phoenix 9 while Reichart directed and edited this proof of concept short film which they hope could lead to a feature film. After a global nuclear war has turned earth into a scorched wasteland, a struggling group of survivors discovers a secret installation that offers a new beginning - but not without a catch...Though the short may start...

"Remember: a better future is waiting for you." Another short to fire up today, this one is more of a proof-of-concept but better than most of the work that comes across our desks. Titled Phoenix 9, this short film is the debut of German team Amir Reichart (director & editor) and Peer Gopfrich (writer & producer) and it's sort of a funky mix of Tron Legacy meets post-apocalyptic survival thriller. "While post-apocalyptic films are immensely popular, we didn't just want to re-tread familiar territory. That's why we introduced a high-tech twist that takes things in a completely unexpected direction and gives the story larger-than-life scope and drama," explains Gopfrich. It's long (over 20 minutes) but actually quite good, view in full below. With the technology that exists today, it’s much easier for aspiring filmmakers to bring their visions to life. I love watching short films and seeing what kind of talent the world has to offer outside of the Hollywood system. There are a lot of filmmakers out there who seem more talented than the people that studios are hiring to make their movies.
Director Amir Reichart and writer/producer Peer Gopfrich created a proof-of-concept short called "Phoenix 9," which is a post-apocalyptic sci-fi thriller that takes place just after a nuclear war has turned earth into a scorched wasteland. The story follows “a tight-knit group of survivors who are on the edge of losing hope, until they discover a secret installation that offers a new beginning - but not without a catch…”
Gopfrich said of his film project,
“While post-apocalyptic films are immensely popular, we didn’t just want to re-tread familiar territory.
