When Viacom took a major loss for the 3rd quarter of 2016, it blamed unspecified failures in its motion picture distribution division. Reporters pieced together some details in the profit and loss statement, and discovered that this film was blamed for the loss.
While set in North Dakota, the filming locations bear no resemblance of the topography of North Dakota. The state if very flat, with a few rolling hills in the western portion of the state. There are no alpine lakes, mountains, evergreen forests or alpine lakes anywhere near North Dakota.
Originally produced by Nickelodeon Movies, who left the project during post production. On November 17, 2016, the second trailer was released, with Nickelodeon's logo signifying that they were back as co-producers.
During one scene, a policeman is seen watching an episode of Spongebob SquarePants on his computer. Spongebob SquarePants is produced by Nickelodeon, who are also the production company behind Monster Trucks.
