It's very cold. There is hardly any coal left in the very poor house, if anything to heat Morti's crib. For the child's own good, his parents take an extreme measure. Someone with very familiar features watches Morti with a pained expression, from the other side of the mirror, from the other shore of time.
While the CGI used in this short is somewhat dated, it also has a neat atmosphere of mystery. The ominous tone of the ending, as well the bitter way in which the protagonist crushes the toy horse symbolizing his childhood innocence makes this feel like the backstory of a villainous character as he embraces the dark side.
I wonder if this was intended to be part of a much bigger project.
