Simple and entertaining
Ihsan_Adnan30 July 2015
I loved it! Cool soundtrack and nice performance. Even if you can anticipate the events and to where they are going you still can enjoy the movie.

I think it is a low budget movie but that will not affect the fact that it is very well made. I did not like the animated parts but I am sure others would have different opinions about it. The story is very simple and the escalation of events is done in a smooth pace.

Nicholas Galitzine did well taking in consideration that this is his first movie, Luke Perry was very convincing too

Worth watching for sure specially if you like musicals.

More Apples Please
conndar13 December 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I gave the movie a very kind and generous 7 out of 10. Don't get me wrong. There are some fine performances to be enjoyed. Acting, directing etc are all on par. Luke Perry is surprisingly believable as the former great and Nicholas Galitzine puts in a fine performance as the up and coming talent. But the plot did remind me an awful lot of 'about a boy'...just with less jokes, in fact no jokes at all. This is a movie that wants to take itself serious, when in truth, it was just in serious need of more apples. We are thrust into the world of a young and talented musician unsure of his own ability and a former music great, with a shady past who is wasting his life away. The young student blackmails the legend into teaching him to play like a rock-star. Hence, both grow through each other and reach a climax not unlike the afore mentioned movie. This time unfortunately though, there is no apple flung from the crowd to balance the scene. There is no humour, no contrast, just a movie that says, 'this is about hard core rock and roll and being bad ass'. I can't help but feel that it falls flat of such high goals. This movie tries to reach to provoke emotion and bring us on a journey of discovery through hardship. But I doesn't really think it manages to accomplish that. Just like the over- played, self-proclaimed amazing hit that would make 'anyone a star'...it simply fails. The song is bland and although slightly catchy it is kind of churned out and clichéd. Which is very apt as it parallels the movie nicely. If it comes on TV give it a chance. I wouldn't go out of my way to see it though. More apples please.

Simple and predictable...but worth seeing.
jmill9021024 November 2016
I like movies about music, and while this film offered no surprises in the story it was still enjoyable due to the strong performances from the two male leads. Luke Perry is a great fit for his role as the former rock star with a tragic past. Nick Galitzine does very well as the shy teen who just wants to play music, even though he has to hide his love of music from his mom.

The music and song writing are not very deep but fit the character who is just learning to play. Perry and Galitzine do their own singing and playing in the film, and while they may not be ready for music careers they both perform well within the limits of their roles.

Pleasantly surprised and enjoyed this film
dom_gordon18 June 2017
Warning: Spoilers
This was one of those films I was expecting to have on in the background but not really find myself being interested in. However, I was pleasantly surprised and found myself really paying attention to the film and the music.

All the main characters play their parts very well and come out with credit for their performances. Especially the young male lead, Nicholas Galitzine, who performs the music as well as coming across as the shy, awkward teen.

There is also a quite difficult scene involving self harm, that would have been difficult to put across without being condescending.

The plot line in a bit predictable to some extent, as you can guess how things work out but overall, this is a feel good film with good music and I came away feeling that I had enjoyed the previous 90 minutes.

Great film about following your musical aspirations
stjoalland12 February 2015
I watched "The Beat Beneath My Feet" last night at the Berlin Film Festival and it was great. It's a beautiful story, executed with style, and the three leads deliver strong performances. In particular, Luke Perry of "Beverly Hills 90210" fame excels as a down-on-his luck musician with a dark secret who hides on a council estate to avoid being jailed for tax evasion. He's extremely moving and memorable as a damaged soul seeking redemption who finds healing through a dorky young neighbor, played by convincing newcomer - Nicholas Galitzine - who is hell bent on being a rock star despite his crippling shyness. The cool soundtrack, in the vein of Coldplay, underscores the story beautifully as well as the animated sequences that highlight the central character's fears and fantasies. "The Beat Beneath My Feet" is a heartfelt, entertaining, feel-good comedy from the UK that I'd highly recommend. Thumbs up to the team behind the film.

1If you like cheese and cringing and have no interest in good music you might like this film
leetabrahams18 August 2015
Follows your standard battle of the bands plot and uses all the clichés that come with it. Which is fine because I had this expectation before watching the film. But what I was hoping for was something that would make the film stand out. Instead you get really mediocre music from the main character and so much cringe your face will hurt after watching this.

Every scene is just pure cringe and cheesy. I am talking people walking on stage one at a time to join in with his performance. The bully who has his own band throwing a fit in the crowd as his girl now flocks to the stage for the main character. Then paparazzi rush the stage to take photos of a boy doing a mediocre performance of a song consisting of about 4 chords... Roll into this some cheesy cliché songs with even cheesier music videos that the main character imagines in his head and this is everything this film has to offer.

It's pretty much the worst film I have ever seen! In fact I have never reviewed a film before but just had to after watching this I felt so strongly about how bad it was.

Beat Beneath My Feet is awesome!
elizabethalexander-082842 November 2016
The Beat Beneath My Feet is a charming musical dramaedy about a teenage social outcast named Tom (Nicholas Galitzine) who discovers his rowdy neighbor (Luke Perry) is actually a former rock & roll legend who fakes his own death to escape financial debt. I loved this coming-of-age film because it thoughtfully shows the struggles of growing up and finding yourself. It is definitely relatable to young adults and teens who have ever struggled with fitting in and I especially loved how Tom's passion of music helped him reach his full-potential. It also included an amazingly up- beat soundtrack that was an exceptional addition to the film. This inspirational indie flick is definitely worth the watch if you haven't already had the chance to see it.

Do not watch with Lisa Dillon in it.
garyc4625 March 2022
Won't entertain anything with Lisa Dillon in. She's awful to her staff and colleagues. She's so stuck up and rude, calling her make up artists terrible names and thinking she's actually a somebody.

She thinks she's a diva but she's actually a nasty person.

Underrated movie of the year
cody-324024 November 2016
If you have ever gone into a movie with low expectations and later left feeling surprised that it actually blew you away, that kind of movie for me was Beat Beneath my Feet. For the most part, I was incredibly impressed by the depth of the narrative and progression of the characters. Starring Nicholas Galitzine as Tom, the central character who is so socially inept that his only friend in his world is rock music. Unfortunately for Tom, his mother (who is played by Lisa Dillon) rejects this music because his estranged father was a former rock star who spent more time on tour than with their family. Another former rock star, Steve (played by Luke Perry) enters their lives and things start to change for both Tom and his Mother. Though the characters are broken and feel out casted in some way, they strike a bond that helps them escape their shells. When the story felt like it could lose my attention, it managed to pull me back in by adding short music videos, which served to express what Tom was feeling while simultaneously providing you with enjoyable music. For a movie revolving around music, this is an important quality to possess and Beat Beneath my Feet certainly delivered on this level as well as many other levels.

Heartwarming Story; Enjoyable Soundtract; Solid Acting
dimcpay30 December 2018
I don't know why so many folks rated this as low as they did; I found it by accident, loved the story, acting, sound .... The soundtrack actually surprised and thrilled me!

Yes it is formulaic to a degree, but really, who cares?

Loved this movie!
nazlyalizadeh-4745227 October 2016
The rock comedy The Beat Beneath My Feet follows Tom (Nick Galtizine) as he tries to overcome the obstacles of his youth. Tom has dreams of competing in the local battle of the bands and becoming a famous rock star, but with his mother's objections from a failed relationship with Tom's rocker father, he must keep those dreams to himself. Tom and his mom get to meet his unruly downstairs neighbor, Steve (Luke Perry), after enduring multiple nights of blasting recorded guitar music. After this not so warm meeting, Tom is able to identify Steve as a former rock guitarist that was believed to be dead. Once he uncovers this information about his neighbor, Tom tries to use it as blackmail for guitar lessons. Though at first getting off to a rocky start, the two slowly form a close bond giving Tom the opportunity to find his voice both on and off the stage. The director (John Williams) is able to portray Tom's newfound voice in a unique way that instantly drew me in, and was one of my favorite aspects of the film. From the use of cartoon-like animation Williams creates music videos throughout the film that draw inspiration from Radiohead. I also read that Nick Galtizine sang all the songs performed in the movie himself, which was really impressive and made his performances in the film more genuine. From a great soundtrack to beautiful cinematography The Beat Beneath My Feet is a heartfelt coming of age drama that I highly recommend you give a watch.

Love it
tingting-6855827 September 2018
Even though the story is cliche and you kind of know where the story is heading, it is simple and sweet! I like the relationship between Steve and Tom. Tom may be a nerd but he Knows how to pester and annoy an adult like a kid. Love this movie. It feels short! The good ending was rather abrupt tho!!

Feeling every minute....
skpn12322 November 2022
"The Beat Beneath My Feet" is an adorable film about finding your place in the world and re-finding it when tragedy strikes..... "Don't Hide" is the take home message and with Nicholas Galitzine at the helm even as a young teen acting in his first film I was captivated emotionally every minute. Every inch of the pain, loss, fear and ultimately the exhilation as he steps into the limelight and who he is meant to be.

My heart broke seeing the incredible Luke Perry OBM 💫 Such a class act who fit this part like a glove. A veteran actor who like Nic, resonates with the same heart and soul that reels you in, devastates you and then has you soaring.

This movie rocks hard!
jamescentre3 November 2016
The Beat Beneath My Feet is a deliciously entertaining musical romp that is sure to inspire dreamers of all ages. The film tells the story of Tom (Nicholas Galitzine), a painfully shy high schooler determined to become a rock star. When Tom discovers that his unruly neighbor (90210's Luke Perry) is actually a "dead" grunge musician with a mountain of unpaid debt, he gives his neighbor an ultimatum: teach him how to become a great singer-songwriter or else he will expose his secret to the world. Perry and Galitzine have amazing chemistry, both delivering brilliantly believable performances as two birds with broken wings. What's particularly notable about this film are its musical sequences. Director John Williams (who directed music videos for Radiohead and Coldplay) manages to orchestrate surreal and truly fascinating musical episodes (featuring rockin' original music) that intelligently parallel what is happening in the story. The Beat Beneath My Feat is a delightful good time that features Luke Perry at the top of his game, and will likely make a star out of talented newcomer Galitzine.
