The theft of a baby
24 January 2014 | by (United Kingdom) – See all my reviews

After the previous story's trip to Scotland the team are back in London. In the opening scene we see a pair of policemen sitting in a car while watching a Turkish café; one of them gets out just before gunman on a motorbike pulls up and shoots his partner. The next thing we see is the discovery of a woman's body in a suitcase. During the postmortem Nikki makes a startling discovery; the dead woman had had a baby cut from her; a baby who is quite possibly still alive. She had also been smuggling drugs. After the discover the woman's identity they go to her home and discover that she may be linked to the Turk who was being watched in the opening scene; the surviving officer is certainly determined to connect the man with the murder; perhaps a little too determined; Jack certainly things so.

This was another good story; throughout the opening episode I was conflicted about DI Brooke's trustworthiness. Sean Gallagher put in a solid performance in the role. The other main suspect, Bekir Humadi was a thoroughly unlikeable character; Akin Gazi did a fine job making this potentially over the top villain believable. As is usually the case there were plenty of likely suspects but when we learn what really happened to the woman it still came as a surprise… at least it did for me. As well as a decent mystery there were plenty of tense moments; not all of which had happy outcomes. Overall this was another good story in the long running series.
