Just when you worry a show may start to hit that "stale" portion of its run, in walks ULYSSES FREAKING GRANT! What a way to freshen up the series. I had my wife, who never watches this, pay attention to the opening where the mule is shot. That little bit of dialogue just goes to show how well this show is done (one less mule.....jeez what a cool little line). You just don't expect those lines in a gritty and period correct western. And then the interplay between USG and Bohannon, the recognition between both of them that the other is more than they seem, just so well done. I love a series that leaves you thanking the creators and all involved every time you watch an episode and not wondering why you bother. Great.
