At least it was an awards ceremony this time

Here we have the BET Awards 2013 and the title is self-explanatory of course. This is the 2013 edition of Black America celebrating and honoring their finest. The good thing is there are actually many awards given out and I have seen other, more recent BET Awards where the entire thing was basically a concert show and occasionally you could read the name of a winner and what category he won. This one here deserves the name award show. But that doesn't mean at all it was a quality watch. Chris Tucker's hosting was not good, the music did very little for me and several winners did not help either. Most of all, I cannot really take a show seriously that wants to tell us Nicki Minaj has talent, especially not repeatedly. Best winner of the night was perhaps Dwyane Wade, but I don't think the occasion does him justice. And lets also not forget about Trayvon the angel and Black Power, the moments when these 2 were referenced were when this show hit rock-bottom. Lost a great deal of respect for Jamie Foxx there. And even if it does not have to do with the specific 2013 edition, I still must say that I find the idea of an award show that focuses on their winners' and nominees' skin color an ethnicity is highly questionable, especially if it comes from those who (unjustified) are the ones complaining about hypocrisy. To me, it sounds highly contradictory. Anyway, it was way too long at 160 minutes, 2 hours 40 minutes and they really should have just gone for the awards with no more than 3 music numbers in the process. Another cringeworthy thing was how several people on stage where shamelessly promoting their upcoming projects. I am looking at Gabrielle Union here, but also especially at Chris Tucker near the end of the show? As a host? Seriously? Very embarrassing. Same for Coca Cola sponsoring awards. Nice message about health to the fans. There are many failures in here, many despicable moments and I am really only giving 4 stars here because the show was not as big of a mess as other BET Awards and because the name for the show is somewhat accurate. The 2013 BET Awards get a thumbs-down from me. Not recommended and finally I must also say I was a bit surprised how several winners did not show up. Maybe they had to promise them a stage performance to do so and that's what they did in more recent editions and that's why it all turned into garbage. Who knows. Skip this one, even if you love award shows.
