Familiar and surreal, "punny" and therapeutically un-serious
9 January 2014 | by See all my reviews

Some seem to find the surreal nature non-palatable and I get that. Not many people got Andy Kaufman. But there is a story and often, dare I say, moral to the episodes. I mentioned it being familiar and I mean that in more than one way. Often times side characters remind me of older classical cartoon characters and I love being reminded of these styles while also having them contrast well with the main characters. The characters being a jolly plump super hero with a handlebar mustache whose power is an intimate grasp of quantum entanglement(I'm guessing), a talking fanny pack that said hero wears on his belly, an easy going dinosaur, and a sentient slice of pizza... they fit right in with my other friends, the gum-ball machine, the magic dog, and the sentient milk-shake. Mmmmmm, sentient fast food... uh, anyway!

I liked Uncle Grandpa from the pilot. The surreal nature grabbed me in a mentally visual way but the on-going episodes proved that it is coherent and fun. The jokes are sometimes a little "internet culture" (which is good for me, but not for your average bear perhaps) but there are certainly enough good pop-culture ones, lovely puns, fun visual gags and easter eggs to discover.

The best part might be the plain adventures. It's got this "sitcom" type way. It doesn't try to be epic. It doesn't try to have continuity. It's simple and stupid while being wacky and colorful.
