The Gang Gets Quarantined !

The Gang Gets Quarantined was pretty damned funny. Not a full-blown "bottle episode," no, but it still mostly used one setting to utilize each member of The Gang to the best of their comedic ability. Plus, within its simple premise (The Gang locking putting themselves on lockdown during a flu epidemic) there were still a surprising amount of twists and swerves.

Like Charlie, Dee, Mac and Dennis curing themselves of their "sickness" by drinking (turns out they were all just severe alcoholics going through unexpected withdrawals) and the end revelation that the lockdown was all for naught as Philly R&B stars Boyz II Men came down with the flu and wound up canceling the concert that The Gang was trying to perform on.

Oh, and that competition? The entire idea of The Gang seriously working hard and cooperating (despite Dennis constantly telling them that they sucked) on an a capella version of "Motownphilly?" Genius. I don't think I've ever seen them have so much drive and determination. And usually, when they do, it all breaks down due to insane in-fighting. But they were all on the same page here (except for Charlie thinking that "all in the same outfit" meant that they'd somehow connect Voltron-style). Hell, they even decided to add some dance steps. They agreed on a tragic back story that turned them all into "religious stuttering army carnies." It was a rare moment of synchronicity.

But then Frank came barging in, on high-alert with another one of his crazy ideas, and got everyone paranoid about the super-flu. Of course Frank was worried that he'd die while the rest of them worried for their singing voices. Then, as the days went on, Frank banished each of them, one by one, into the bathroom for violating lockdown while he became more and more obsessed with being smooth and clean. "I just want to be pure," he moaned as The Gang found him hairless and slithering along the floor in his underwear (shocker) covered head-to-toe in Purell.

There were also smaller nuggets of comedy gold hidden throughout the episode; like Frank guessing "Ocean's Eleven" during a game of Charades after Charlie did nothing more than make a spaz face and pick his nose (it was a nod to DiCaprio in Gilbert Grape), Dennis only getting out "Motownphil..." before throwing up in the sink, and Charlie waking around a convenience store wearing his mom's old bubble boy suit - complete with a beer bottle sticking out of a built-in booze hatch.

Oh, an Dennis mentally shifting his junk. "Flacid, erect. Flacid, erect..."

"The Gang Gets Quarantined" was another strong Season 9 (!) episode, proving that perhaps The Gang really did solve the gas crisis after all. Because their tank isn't empty yet.
