Seann William Scott lobbied for the lead role.
The Monte Carlo that Seann William Scott drives throughout the film belonged to costar David Arquette and was given to him as a gift by his ex-wife and the film's director, Courteney Cox.
As Ted walks into the nursing home, he says "Hello" to an old lady who replies, "Aw, fuck you." The woman's line was added and dubbed by director Courteney Cox.

Both David Fincher (personal friend of Courteney Cox) and Gus Van Sant (they share the same agent) saw rough cuts and made her useful suggestions.
The humorous tone and reasons for Ted wanting to commit suicide weren't clearly established in the original cut of the film so they shot a new opening sequence.
The montage of Ted and Penny falling in love was shot at the home of director Courteney Cox.

Director Courteney Cox met writer David Flebotte when she was starring on Dirt (2007). Flebotte commented that he had just finished the script for this film and sent it to Cox before he submitted it to his agent. The property got tied up for several years after his agent became involved, but Cox had been so taken with the material that Flebotte insisted she direct.
