It's 1953 and Jean is surprised to read in the newspaper that a former colleague from the years at Bletchley Park, Alice, has been charged with the murder of one of the Bletchley scientists John Richards. Jean recalls that John and Alice were lovers while working together. Strangely, Alice has refused to speak to anyone about what's happened. She will neither plead guilty or claim innocence. Jean contacts Lucy, Millie and Susan and they begin their own investigation. They learn that John had recently sent flowers to a young woman, Lizzie Lancaster and when they search her flat they find classified files and a set of newspaper clippings about a military accident. They conclude Alice is protecting someone with her silence but she is convicted and sentenced to hang.
