Richelieu receives Luca Sestini, a Jesuit priest sent by the pope in Rome to try and persuade Richelieu to end the French alliance with Protestant Sweden. At the same time Countess Ninon De Larroque incurs Richelieu's displeasure when she advocates education for women of all classes. Ninon is wealthy and Richelieu wants some of that wealth for the ailing royal coffers so he sends Milady to infiltrate her salon. Ninon is arrested and charged with witchcraft - spiriting young girls away to her cause - and, due to Milady's lies is found guilty. Richelieu is poisoned but, as Ninon's execution is prepared, the musketeers discover the identity of the poisoner and, in what passes for gratitude, Richelieu seals a bargain with the newly freed Ninon.
