Bob Dylan and The Band: Down in the Flood (2012)

*** 1/2 (out of 4)

Highly entertaining documentary covering the ten-year period that drew music legends Bob Dylan and The Band together. Their journey started with The Hawks backing Dylan up on his infamous 1966 electric tour through Europe and would end on Thanksgiving night when The Band said goodbye to touring. The documentary, unlike so many of the fan-produced films out there, is given a lot of extra credit because we actually get to hear music clips from both Dylan and The Band. The documentary clocks in just under two-hours and covers a great deal including what The Band (known as The Hawks at first) were doing early in their careers and what changes were made to the group when they joined Dylan. The recording of their first two albums is covered as well as their work with Dylan on The Basement Tapes, Planet Waves and of course their 1974 tour together. Fans are certainly going to want to check this documentary out since there's so much great footage. You've got the Isle of Wright festival, various performances taken from EAT THE DOCUMENT and there's some nice photographs as well. The interviews are all pretty good as they help tell the story and give their opinions on what Dylan was trying to do with this period of his career. There's also discussion of albums like Nashville Skyline and New Morning. Garth Hudson is also interviewed here but I swear I couldn't understand a single word he was saying. Even with that, DOWN IN THE FLOOD does a very good job at showing the rather amazing ten-year period that Dylan and The Band shared and is highly recommended.
