As part of last week's preview of the finale, we saw a lot of drama unfold. David finding out about the sperm; Mary Jane at Andre's house; Kara telling Mary Jane off; and a few other things. Just so you know, none of that is in this episode. Consider this, simply, the calm before the storm.
Topic 1: Niecy
After last week's face off between aunt and niece, Mary Jane is the first to apologize and with the apology, Niecy opens up to Mary Jane. Now, from what we are told, Niecy had dreams of becoming a lawyer before she got pregnant, twice, and now all she dreams of is her baby having all the beauty that would be bestowed to her because of her father's Filipino characteristics. With this, the topic of insecurities come into play, with the conversation being relatable, or recognizable perhaps, for those who don't fit a European standard of beauty. And though the scene between Niecy and Mary Jane isn't that long, it shows that just as much as Raven Goodwin (Niecy) can play a token Black best friend on Good Luck Charlie, she also has the ability to make you feel something for her character, and relate at the same time.
Their reconciliation aside, this episode also features Niecy giving birth, off screen, and Patrick and P.J. dragging Dante's low down ass to the hospital. But, something I think worth noting is that despite how Dante dresses, and acts, a part of me loves how he is shown living in what looks like a middle class home. One which, perhaps, maybe a single parent one. Showing that, despite what many think, middle class people can have ghetto drama as well.
That comment aside, with Niecy's baby being born, hopefully Dante steps up. If not, Goodwin will likely have a few more good scenes written for her. Because it doesn't seem like you can play a Patterson woman and get away with it.
Topic 2: Terrence
We learn that, in this episode, Terrence (Ludacris) has committed suicide. In what is very much a dramatic move, his death causes major issues for Mary Jane for she is cited as the reason he killed himself. This leads to a lawsuit, and SNC even taking Mary Jane off air and letting Mark have her time slot for a day. All this though seems to being weighing heavily on Mary Jane. It was a news story worth reporting, but is it like what that random dude said at the gala? Or what others have been saying? Why tear someone down when they were trying to do good?
What doesn't help is that Kara seems like she was beginning to doubt if Mary Jane had the stomach for the business, as she spoke with her ex- husband over her own issues dealing with her career ambitions being detrimental to her personal life. But, being that Mary Jane is a Patterson, and no Patterson doesn't figure out a way to spin a situation in their favor, Mary Jane gets on air, says screw the gag order SNC wants, and speaks from the heart. She does say she is sorry about what happened to Terrence, but also reinforces the idea that Terrence was human, and what really matters, right now, is what he spent his life doing. Exposing the issues of the prison system, showing the issues of what, Michelle Alexander calls, "The New Jim Crow" and with this speech, she seems to bring herself in the conversation, and steer it toward a more productive direction.
Making so, overall, this episode was about getting some situations resolved, like Niecy being pregnant, and putting Terrence away. But, the end of the episode features David at Mary Jane's and asking about his stolen sperm. Leading us to wonder, who's the snitch?
