Lauren, 45, lives in London with her two children. She is mixed race, Asian, a transracial adoptee. All her life she has felt a lack of identity and belonging, disconnected to her heritage. She decides to search for her long-lost mother, a Chinese-Hong Kong woman. Upon finding her, she brings her to her family home in an attempt to bond with her. This is where the story begins. Scared to show her vulnerable side, Lauren decides the only way to lovingly and slowly connect with her biological mother and identity is to create a "1 week Chinese recipes cooking together" activity, despite her terrible abilities in the kitchen. There is only one problem: the Mother does not speak English and Lauren does not speak Cantonese. Miles and miles of cultural difference, unshared feelings, and questions never asked end up vanishing as the two women reunite, show their personalities, and discover their mother-child love for each other.
