Comic-Con: Luc Besson wows with 'Valerian' footage

21 July 2016 4:54 PM, PDT | ScreenDaily | See recent ScreenDaily news »

In a day for internationally renowned directors making their Hall H debuts, the French filmmaker and Europacorp chief quickly found his footing in San Diego as he shared first images and footage from Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets.

Besson, who finished shooting five weeks ago, said he still had a sizeable amount of the 2,734 FX shots to complete and expected the film to be finished in ten months. It is scheduled to open in exactly one year’s time on July 21, 2017.

Ever the showman, the director of such cult favourites as Leon, The Fifth Element and recent global hit Lucy brought footage with him.

What became immediately clear was that in Cara Delevingne he has found his latest female action hero.

The former British model plays the eponymous character’s companion and then some as Laureline and is shown battling guards, flying a spaceship and avoiding all manner of deep space mayhem hand-in-hand with Valerian »

21 July 2016 3:24 PM, PDT | JoBlo.com | See recent JoBlo news »

Like many of you, I've been waiting for director Luc Besson to return to the sci-fi genre ever since The Fifth Element came out in 1997. Now, Besson is making his way back after nearly 20 years away... Read More »

Luc Besson’s EuropaCorp Posts $31 Million Loss in ‘Transition Year’

1 July 2016 2:19 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

In what it termed a “transition year,” with no new “Taken” or “Lucy” and nine English-language movies still to release, EuropaCorp posted an annual net loss of €27.7 million ($30.8 million) for 2015-16, the company announced Friday. Operating losses were €22.3 million ($24.8 million).

The downbeat results for the financial year ending March 31 are broadly in line with expectations: EuropaCorp, led by Luc Besson, had already issued a profit warning before posting its numbers. Its share price edged down in early-morning trading Friday on the Paris bourse, losing 1.8%. EuropaCorp stock has already fallen by 17.7% in 2016.

The company’s losses come after a 2014-15 financial year when it registered €16.2 million ($18 million) in net profit thanks to returns from “Taken 3” and Scarlett Johansson-starrer “Lucy.” By contrast, EuropaCorp released just five movies in 2015-16, only one of which received global distribution.

Consolidated annual revenues were down 35% to €147.3 million ($163.7 million) from €226.9 million ($252.2 million) in 2014-15.

The numbers are certainly impressive enough to give Kevin Feige and company food for thought anyway, as Johansson has earned a whopping $3.3 billion over the course of her career. A good chunk of that comes from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but the actress has obviously also done pretty well thanks to the likes of Lucy, The Island, and Hail, Caesar! among others.

As of right now, The Avengers star ranks above names like Will Smith, Adam Sandler, and even Harry Potter alum Daniel Radcliffe. With Avengers: Infinity War right around the corner, chances are that the actress could »

To date, her movies have grossed more than $3.3 billion at the domestic box office alone.
