- Inside Dutch is the story of a young man who is frozen at the social age of four. A theater student at a mid-west university, he wanders the night looking for characters to know from the inside. The story is crossed with philosophy, theater, and memories of an unusual childhood.—Anonymous
- Dutch is a theater student in a mid-west town. He is addicted to books, theater, sex, characters and wandering the night to see what he can find. The story begins and ends in Dutch's bedroom. His mind plays a continuous loop of readings from philosophy, Russian lit, to self-help, and drama. We know his mind is quite active but are unsure as to what is real, and what only story. As he falls off to sleep he recalls how his mother left him to live with Eve when he was four, because Eve had no children of her own and Dutch's mother felt sorry for her. 'So she gave me away. Just like that.' His sleep takes him to Marcy, friend, hooker, lover. They wander the streets as we discover that Eve's livelihood was a result of her sexual encounters. 'Dressed in silk, Eve entertained her gentleman callers...I'd sit in a chair in the corner of the room and watch for hours.'
As the dream continues, Dutch seeks out a stranger to help, sitting curled up and trying to get away from the cold. He takes James to his car to warm up. They engage in conversation over a cup of coco. This scene twists as Equus pulls at Dutch to ride, free, and raw. Real or imagined he wakes in fright at his conquests and battles the condemning gaze of Equus to the final view in the mirror.
