Storyline

Luther investigates the Lanes' murders, noting that Dani has been made up in the same way as Emily. He also discovers that Ronnie Holland, who headed the Shoreditch Creeper case, has died in suspicious circumstances. Aware of Ripley's involvement with Erin Gray he confronts her and tells her not to use the sergeant in any vendetta against him. Luther discovers that Holland was obsessed with a former murderer William Carney, now debilitated and in a care home. Furthermore Carney has been receiving regular visits from a mysterious man called Paul Ellis. From speaking to Carney Luther works out that the serial killer, a disciple of the Shoreditch Creeper, is enacting revenge on women, having murdered his mother for being a whore, and thus cracks the case. Ripley arrests Ken for killing Cass but Luther manages to get him back on side. Written by don @ minifie-1

The conclusion to the 'fetish murder' case
9 July 2013 | by (United Kingdom) – See all my reviews

This episode opens with Luther being called to the scene of the murder that happened at the end of episode one. He still doesn't know who the killer is but he is convinced that it is linked to a string of unsolved murders thirty years ago. These killings may have been officially unsolved but the investigating officer was convinced that he knew who did it so Luther goes to visit that suspect in a nursing home… just as the current killer leaves! He brings the old man in for questioning but is just taunted; it looks as if there will be another killing and Luther will have to act fast if he is to save the next potential victims. Meanwhile DS Ripley is told to wrap up the Jared Cass alone… of course that isn't all he is doing as he is still keeping tabs on Luther for CIB.

This was a good conclusion to the first two cases of this series; both were well handled… Luther's investigation of the fetish killer may have been more dramatic but Ripley's resolution of the Cass case was just as impressive in an altogether more understated way. The investigation into Luther's possibly criminal activities seemed to come to an end with a nice twist although I wouldn't be surprised if we haven't seen the end of it; DSU Stark is like a dog with a bone and he clearly wants Luther. The romantic subplot between Luther and Mary still hasn't gone anywhere but I'm sure it will get more interesting as the short season approaches its conclusion. Anybody thinking about not watching this episode because of the disturbing scenes in the previous episode need not worry; there is far less disturbing material here and most of what there is features in the recap of the last episode!
