Here we are again. David Zaslav and Warner Bros. Discovery are making new bets about what you want from a streaming service. This time, they are attempting to push out even more original content for something even easier to produce than reality TV. Max is set to begin airing CNN news as a 24/7 service to their already existing platform.
However, this move is controversial for a variety of reasons. Let's dive into Max's latest feature and whether viewers would even want it.
Max: Killing Its Own Library
One of the things making people upset about the Max brand is that it is gradually taking its library out of circulation. This means that anything owned by Warner Bros. Discovery can be removed from all digital sources, the main one being Max (formerly HBO Max).
The company has cited a variety of reasons, but the most common is that it allows them to avoid paying residuals.

The new Warner Bros. Discovery streaming platform Max announced Thursday the addition of CNN Max, a 24/7 news service that will be free to subscribers.
The streaming news offering will launch Sept. 27, just over a year after the hastily aborted launch of CNN+. That project, which launched in May of 2022, was shut down three weeks later as the Warner Bros. merger with Discovery was freshly underway.
“CNN Max will leverage CNN’s reporting excellence, global newsgathering, and live programming from CNN US, CNN International, and feature original programming built specifically for Max,” the company said in a Thursday release. “CNN Max will be a new seven-day-a-week/24-hour service and be part of an open beta for news that will enable experimentation with product features, content offerings and original storytelling, all with the input and feedback from the Max community.”
The service will feature known CNN anchors and new programming built specifically for the streaming platform.

You might call it CNN Headline News — for the streaming era.
Warner Bros. Discovery plans to unveil a 24/7 live-streamed news service called “CNN Max” on September 27, and indicated the outlet would focus initially on breaking news. Anchors including Jim Acosta, Rahel Solomon, Amara Walker, Fredricka Whitfield and Jim Sciutto have been given assignments, with Sciutto set to lead breaking news in the afternoons. Bianna Golodryga and Christiane Amanpour could also have roles, according to a person familiar with the situation.
CNN has fallen far behind its rivals when it comes to streaming, with Warner scuttling a nascent subscription-based streaming outlet, CNN+, last year. As the company recalibrated CNN’s strategy, however, MSNBC, Fox News Channel, ABC News and CBS News have all had opportunities to establish new programming for the broadband set, and to experiment while refining their brands in the space. CNN is in some ways starting to run...

When it came time for CNN anchor Jake Tapper to get in shape, he turned to his friend, actor Paul Rudd, for inspiration.
The network’s Chief Washington Correspondent says life on the campaign trail is what first developed his poor eating habits. Tapper started reporting during ’99/2000 race and says there was nothing but junk food on the road.
“I was about 30-years-old, so I was still relatively unconcerned about my diet,” Tapper told Bon Appetit. “And I would drink a lot—you know at night with campaign sources and stuff.”

On behalf of the Bering Sea crab fleet featured on the hit Discovery Channel series "Deadliest Catch," Capt. Keith Colburn of the F/V Wizard sat down with CNN's Jake Tapper and then headed to Capitol Hill on Friday (Oct. 11) to testify before the Senate Commerce Committee on how the current government shutdown is going to delay the start of the fall king-crab season, which is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, Oct. 15.
The panel included committee chairman Sen. Jay Rockfeller (D-w.V.), Colburn's own Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.). and Sen. John Thune (R-s.D.), who came in late after dealing with the deaths of up to 100,000 cattle in a freak blizzard that hit his agriculture-dependent home state.
To the legislators, Colburn said, "On behalf of all fishermen, I'm asking Congress to end the shutdown now. I'm a small businessman in a big ocean with big bills. I need to go fishing.

A little under four years ago, CNN anchor and chief Washington correspondent Jake Tapper -- who then worked for ABC News -- was sitting in a hospital room with his wife and newborn son, when a TV report about a battle in Afghanistan caught his eye.
In November of 2012, Tapper, now the host of the weekday CNN series "The Lead With Jake Tapper," released his nonfiction book, "The Outpost: An Untold Story of American Valor," based on that battle, outlined in this excerpt from a description of of the book:
At 6:00 a.m. on the morning of October 3, 2009, Combat Outpost Keating was viciously attacked by Taliban insurgents. The 53 U.S. troops, having been stationed at the bottom of three steep mountains, were severely outmanned by nearly 400 Taliban fighters. Though the Americans ultimately prevailed, their casualties made it one of the war's deadliest battles for U.S. forces. And after...

Well, Jeff Zucker did say that CNN was going to more broadly define what news was. It looks like it is going to more broadly define the sort of roles its reporters will play too. With The Lead With Jake Tapper up in the ratings, its host Jake Tapper is going dramatic, with his previously announced role on All My Childrennow set for August 12. The opportunity emerged when Tapper went up to Connecticut to do a piece on the cancelled ABC show’s new online life. Unlike CNN personalities like Wolf Blitzer or Larry King, who often show up on movies and TV shows playing themselves, Tapper will appear on the online soap as Business News Update reporter Spencer Phillips, which sounds almost like a real cable news reporter’s name. His character tries to interview Brooke English (Julia Barr) and Dixie Cooney (Cady McClain). This will be Tapper’s dramatic debut and finale,...

In the tense hours overnight from Thursday, April 18, to Friday, April 19, after Boston Marathon bombing suspects and brothers Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsnarnev engaged in a shootout with police -- and after the murder of MIT police Officer Sean Collier -- Jake Tapper essentially was CNN.
"I was anchoring," he tells Zap2it, talking on Thursday (May 16), "from something like 1:30 in the morning till 9:30 in the morning. That was a crazy night."
With photos of the suspects circulating, Tapper stayed on his iPad, following news and social-media reports and listening to the local police scanners, via a link provided to by followers to his popular Twitter feed, @jaketapper.
"I reached out to the CNN news desk," he recalls, "and said, 'Is anyone listening to this?' This is one in the morning. 'Is anyone listening to this? Something serious is going on.'"
