Storyline

In 2010, rock band The National were about to embark on the biggest tour of their career. After ten years as a band, and five critically acclaimed albums, they were finally enjoying wider recognition. Lead singer Matt Berninger invited his younger brother, Tom, to join the tour's crew. A budding horror filmmaker, Tom - who is nine years younger than Matt and listens exclusively to heavy metal - decided to bring his camera along. Tom's at sea in the world of indie rock, and living in his brother's shadow brings out the younger sibling in him - he drinks, complains, and struggles to balance his ambition with his tour responsibilities. The result is a film about brothers and about making something of your own. Written by Anonymous

Jesus Christ the National are a bunch of c0nts
20 July 2014 | by (UK) – See all my reviews

Average, vaguely likable guy goes on tour with his brother's band who turn out to represent the arse-end of modern indie. The only value to this is the lampooning of a very, very pretentious band who are really fourth-generation off-the-peg hipsters peddling cookie-cutter angst over the type of boring rifforama their horn-rimmed, "quirky" accountant audience lap up because they imagine that if this was 80s then these guys are the Smiths, when in fact their audience would be into nothing more esoteric than Wham! if they lived in the 80s.

The camera-work is terrible - the whole thing is a shambles - and both brothers come off as though they are hiding some terrible guilty secret, something like a rightly illegal fetish, maybe paedophilia; I should say my money would go on the oh-so-precious ersatz-fake-cool successful one as the most likely contender there.

This only gets as much as a five because it almost accidentally sends up everything I hate about modern indie music.
