A Delightfully Inventive and Heartfelt Journey
17 October 2013 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

Purgatorio is a captivating, thought-provoking, deeply emotional and oddly funny piece of cinema destined for its own cult following. Intelligently written and gracefully helmed by David Fitch (Ethereal Everlasting), Purgatorio puts an imaginative spin on the second poem from Dante Alighieri's renowned Divine Comedy, complete with contemporary staging, naturally sharp dialogue and an understated yet catchy soundtrack.

Following a botched suicide attempt, Dan (Jason Nicola), finds himself working as an unqualified and uninterested auto mechanic in a run down gas station off a desolate desert highway. Soon after "mostly" fixing Vince's (Max Winthrop) car the two set off to find out who else is around, why they are here and most importantly how to get out.

Witty and poignant banter express the ups and downs of life and thoughts on the afterlife. Love, Trust, Betrayal, Sin and the idea of God all come in to play and a road trip of discovery between two damaged 'friends' becomes a journey of hope and salvation as they encounter other residents ("The locals call it Purgatorio, which admittedly has a better ring than my Sh**sville" as Beatrice points out) each with their own story to tell.

ifilmbeat's rating for "Purgatorio" is a 9/10. A must see for those who enjoy inventive and inspired stories unafraid to venture skillfully beyond the conventional.
