Chris Hemsworth is a Hacker in Michael Mann’s Blackhat

2 hours ago | Filmonic.com | See recent Filmonic news »

You know what, I’ll watch anything from the guy that brought us Heat, but his latest thriller, Blackhat, has a major flaw that’s gonna be very very hard to look past. I’m sorry but I can’t take seriously a man with biceps thicker then my neck, not as a hacker. Chris Hemsworth is many things, […]

Top 5: The Equalizer, David Fincher Retrospective, First Blackhat Trailer, The Boxtrolls, New Trailer for The Babadook

Two weeks ago I promised a recap of my time at MondoCon for today's opening paragraph. As it turns out, I ended up doing a standalone recap of the event earlier in the week which frees up space for a recommendation today. In spite of its lukewarm reception thus far, director Shawn Levy's family dramedy This Is Where I Leave You is absolutely worth checking out. Sure, it can be formulaic at times. Yeah, some of the characters' trials are a touch melodramatic. Still yet, Leave You is an enjoyable pic with great performances across its ensemble cast (especially from Adam Driver and Rose Byrne). It's the type of mildly grown-up fare that I'd love to see Levy revisit sooner rather than later. If you haven't already, skip the reviews and check it out for yourself. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. Moving on to the reason we're all here, »

Crowe, Sandler Were Original "Collateral" Stars

26 September 2014 7:32 PM, PDT | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

There has been much debate over Michael Mann's films over the past decade-and-a-half, though one that seems to be universally liked is 2004's "Collateral".

At one time though, it turns out neither Tom Cruise or Jamie Foxx were slated to star. Instead, it was going to be a vehicle for Adam Sandler and Russell Crowe. Talking about his upcoming cyber warfare thriller "Blackhat," Mann tells THR:

"Nothing's wrong with Adam Sandler, but it kinda envisioned a - it took place in New York, the Jamie Foxx character was a badly written Jewish cab driver, with the kind of stereotypes that can only come from someone writing that kind of a character who's foreign, who's not American, that doesn't live in New York."

Mann was referring to the film's Australian screen writer Stuart Beattie and the script which was originally entitled "The Lost Domino" and developed with Crowe and Sandler in mind. »

Trivia: Michael Mann Originally Developed 'Collateral' As A Movie For Adam Sandler And Russell Crowe

26 September 2014 12:39 PM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

With the first trailer for Michael Mann's new film "Blackhat" now online, there's no better time than the present to catch up with his filmography before the cyber thriller hits (our retrospective of his work should provide a good starting point). But here's some trivia some of you might know already, though others perhaps not: the director's once had a very different duo in mind for his 2004 effort "Collateral." Speaking with THR, Mann revealed that Adam Sandler and Russell Crowe were attached in an earlier incarnation of the movie. That's right, Billy Madison was almost in a Michael Mann movie. "Nothing's wrong with Adam Sandler, but it kinda envisioned a—it took place in New York, the Jamie Foxx character was a badly written Jewish cab driver, with the kind of stereotypes that can only come from someone writing that kind of a character who's foreign, who's not American, »

Convicts and Cyber-crime: First trailer for Michael Mann's Blackhat with Chris Hemsworth

26 September 2014 12:28 PM, PDT | Cineplex | See recent Cineplex news »

Cyberspace is full of hackers.  And some of them look like Chris Hemsworth.

Blackhat is Michael Mann’s latest thriller.  Set in the world of cybercrime, an incarcerated hacker genius (Hemsowrth) is recruited by the high-ranking American and Chinese officials to help stop an international network of cyber-criminals.  In a trade for a reduced prison sentence, Hemswoth’s character, Nicholas Hathaway, must put a stop to the criminal mastermind who has been manipulating financial markets around the globe.

Don’t expect Hemsworth to stay behind a computer screen and fight the bad guys with his keyboard.  This is Thor we’re talking about.  And while he might exchange the hammer for a mouse and a monitor in Blackhat, he’s still prepared for a fight.  With exotic locales, explosions and fist fights galore, Blackhat is more action and less computer programming than you might expect.

Michael Mann’s ‘Blackhat’ Trailer Knows Real Hackers Look Like Thor

26 September 2014 7:00 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

For most of us, everything we know about hackers comes from the movies. They exist in a couple different variations — the good ones are young, geeky and capable of doing anything, and the evil ones are a little bit older, still geeky and even more capable of doing anything. Michael Mann‘s take on the character was bound to be a little bit different from the norm, but who knew he’d find inspiration in 2001’s Huge Ackman-starrer Swordfish? Blackhat stars Chris Hemsworth as Nicholas Hathoway, a legendary hacker currently serving time for, well, hacking. He’s released early in order to help the feds identify and apprehend a far more dangerous hacker who’s wreaking havoc on the world’s financial infrastructure, but lest you think Hemsworth’s going to be stuck behind a keyboard for the whole movie think again. This hacker is also a field agent with weapons and hand-to-hand combat skills to spare »

First trailer for Michael Mann's Blackhat

25 September 2014 12:09 PM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

The director of Heat and The Insider brings us the cyber-crime thriller, Blackhat, starring Chris Hemsworth. Here's the first trailer...

Even on an off-day, Michael Mann's films offer something captivating. The director's latest film, Blackhat - originally called Cyber - looks like his earlier Miami Vice (both the 80s show he developed and the 2006 film) fused with an up-to-the-minute story about computer hacking.

Chris Hemsworth stars as a decidedly Sonny Crockett-like central character, a convicted hacker who's taken out of prison to help track down a highly-organised cyber criminal. It looks as handsomely-shot as we'd expect, and there's even the suggestion of a Heat-like shoot-out in a busy part of China.

Blackhat is out on the 20th February in the UK. We're really looking forward to this one.

Trailer For Michael Mann's Blackhat Thriller with Chris Hemsworth

25 September 2014 11:50 AM, PDT | GeekTyrant | See recent GeekTyrant news »

Blackhat is the first film we've seen from director Michael Mann in five years. The last movie he made was Public Enemies with Johnny Depp. Today we've got the first trailer for his cyber crime thriller, which stars Chris Hemsworth as a gifted convict who is taken out of prison to help hunt down a high-level hacker who is looking to take down the world's banking system.

For the most part, I really like the films that Mann has made in his career, and this looks like it will be a good one. The supporting cast includes Viola Davis, Holt McCallany, Wei Tang, and Leehom Wang.  »
