2016’s films ranked

20 January 2017 1:20 PM, PST | www.flickfilosopher.com | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

This ranking includes only new theatrical releases viewed for the awards year of 2016 (for eligibility for the Academy Awards and the Ofcs and Awfj awards); some films released in the UK without Us releases (and so ineligible for those awards this year) may also be included, for my own bookkeeping purposes. Links go to my review. Numbers after each entry are Date First Viewed/NYC Release Date/London Release Date; year is 2016 unless otherwise noted.

01.03.17: This ranking is not quite final; I will continue to add films and links to reviews through the awards season that ends with the Oscars ceremony on February 26th.

Only 17% of Rogue One Dialogue Is Spoken by a Female Character

20 January 2017 9:00 AM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

A lot has been made bout the fact that both Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Rogue One have female lead characters, but a new study shows that might not be all it's cracked up to be. While both of these latest entries in the Star Wars franchise do have strong women as protagonist, both movies are still quite male heavy. Even lopsided. A new study shows that only 17% of the dialogue in Rogue One is spoken by one of the movies few female characters.

Jyn Erso led Rogue One to becoming the highest grossing movie in the U.S., no small feat that Felicity Jones helped push the movie to the top the box office as the face of this first Star Wars anthology movie. The prequel was also praised for its diverse cast. But diving deeper into the story elements, and what actually happens on screen shows »

Conecta Fiction, A New International TV Series Co-Prod Event, Eyes Spanish-Speaking World

18 January 2017 5:57 AM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

The first edition of Conecta Fiction, a pioneering TV co-production and networking event aimed at connecting the European, Latin American and the U.S. Hispanic markets, will run June 21-23 in the picturesque Santiago de Compostela, the capital of northern Spanish region Galicia.

Recovering from a double-dip recession, Spain boasts a considerable TV market and production sector, by far the largest in the Spanish-speaking world, investing $2.8 bullion in TV programming compared to an expenditure of  $1.5 billion for Mexico and $1.4 billion for Brazil.

A consequence of the golden age that Spanish TV fiction is living at home and abroad, as the demand for scripted fare lifts across much of the world, the launch of Conecta Fiction finally begins to put Spain on the level of other big European TV markets that already operate full or partially dedicated fiction TV co-production meetings, such as France’s Series Mania and a proposed Cannes TV festival, »

The top-grossing films of 2016 were:

Finding Dory

Captain America: Civil War

“Zootopia”

The Jungle Book

The Secret Life of Pets

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

“Deadpool”

Suicide Squad

Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them

Doctor Strange

Read More:

Bustle’s most buzzed about films were:

La La Land

“Arrival”

“Ghostbusters”

“Moana”

“Moonlight”

Manchester By the Sea

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

X-Men: Apocalypse

Bad Moms

The Legend of Tarzan

To pass the so-called Bechdel test, a movie or story must have: At least two named female characters, who have a conversation, about something other than a man. »

11 January 2017 5:15 PM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

With few new releases in the first week of the new year, the top five disc sellers are unchanged from the previous week.

Sony Pictures’ “The Magnificent Seven” enjoyed a third week at No. 1 on the Npd VideoScan disc sales chart, which tracks combined Blu-ray Disc and DVD sales, for the week ended Jan. 8.

Warner’s “Suicide Squad” again finished second, Universal Pictures’ “The Secret Life of Pets” remained in third place, and two more Warner titles held flat at No. 4 and No. 5: “Sully” and “Storks.”

The highest-ranking newcomer was Lionsgate’s “Blair Witch,” the belated third installment in the “found footage” horror franchise that began with 1999’s “The Blair Witch Project.” The film, with a domestic gross of $20.8 million, debuted at No. 7 on the overall disc sales chart, behind Paramount’s “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children,” which again finished the week at No. 6.

The Merc With a Mouth isn’t a character to play by the rulebook, so it’s almost fitting that Deadpool, the scrappy little underdog that arguably became 2016’s biggest success story, has flipped the bird at convention to collect a series of nominations during the most prestigious period on the Hollywood calendar: awards season.

Marquee blockbusters, particularly those based on comic book characters, often struggle to make much of a dent on the awards circuit, but to date, Tim Miller’s R-rated solo movie has landed a Golden Globes nomination and, perhaps most surprising of all, a nomination for a Writer’s Guild Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. Now, you can add the PGAs to Deadpool‘s growing collection.
