The torture part of the episode shows a whole different, dark side to Castle. We've only seen him as a clown/dandy, as a typical over-protective father, but now we see that when he says he will do anything to protect the ones he loves, especially Alexis, he puts his money where his mouth is. This shows something that is rarely seen in television. Normally, it's leaving everything to the cops or just killing the bad guys, rarely do you see a man resort to such tactics. This is the last thing anyone would expect from a man like Castle.

What's better, in one episode he mentions that if he were a comic book hero, it would be Bruce Wayne/Batman. Here, he shows he could be Batman...a hero willing to do anything (short of murder) to fight crime (or in Castle's case, protect the ones he loves).

An excellent episode all around.

One Of The Top Episodes

This one certainly is on the darker side. You will see something not seen in Castle to this point.

It does make for a great story and your eyes should be glued to the TV throughout the episode. Well directed, written & acted.

Kudos on this excellent episode.

An otherwise okay episode marred by the use of torture
Gore_Won22 June 2013
It's a cheap emotional play for script writers to use torture as a device to extract information. It's wrong, it doesn't work in practice, and it needs to stop in the real and fictional worlds.

It does not matter who is involved. I know that this is the Castle-world, in which people involved with a victim in a case is allowed to work on the case. But it is exactly in this kind of situation that we show our true selves.

Just a few episodes before, Beckett showed herself to be a hero, putting justice above her emotions. Castle is never THE hero of the show, but Beckett in allowing him to do what he did is just as bad.

DISNEY supports torture... great
nemesis-885 April 2022
Disney of all possible producers is telling us that that torture can be justified. It cannot. Ever. In any circumstances. Becket declares that the person is under arrest and then allows Castle to torture him at his own leisure. That's not only a direct violation of at least a hundred different laws and operaitonal instruction of the NYPD, but also violates quite a few Geneva Convention articles. But the worst of it is that NYPD, already well-known for its disregard of human life and dignity, suddenly got a huge inspiraiton for their investigative methods. Thanks, Disney.

Torture is disgusting. In any form. Used on anyone. And you don't "become just like the bad guys" when you use it. Oh no, you are MUCH worse than them. Because you break the law under the welcoming wing of your own police badge or military mandate. NOTHING can be worse.

And before anyone asks what I would do in this situation, I can tell you I don't know. But I hope my friends in law enforecement (if I ever stoop down to have any) will be worried enough about their pensions to keep me far away from a situation when I can become a monster.
