The sound of a 100 horror snobs
7 May 2014 | by (Canada) – See all my reviews

Like many of the recent old-school homages in horror, not even irony can save this from being truly awful. I understand that like most retro-horror it is supposed to be dumb and campy and intentionally bad, but as I have written before, if one sets out to undertake such a task, the golden rule is always to ensure that the film is likable as well as awful.

Discopathe is not likable. It is irritating and vacuous, shallow and boring in a way that even few 80s films themselves could have hoped to be. Much like The Taint, and Father's Day, to name just the immediate two atrocities that come to mind, this is a film that wallows in its own awfulness and expects the viewer to stand by patiently with a hose and towel to clean it up afterwards. The only problem is, these films give me no reason to want to assist them; in fact, as they begin to drown in their own dreadfulness, my impulse is to throw them a cinder block.

Then again, I have never swam with the current so I imagine many horror fans will enjoy this. Those of you who suffered through it already, and have maintained an insatiable fetish for 70-80s horror, will be soiling yourself with glee, hipsters will be ironing-on the film poster to their glittery ringer tees, and horror snobs will claim this a work of genius then continue to deride found-footage as so last-week and exhausted.

I should have known after reading the bootlick review on Bloody Disgusting that this would have been one to avoid.

Lesson learned.
