A travelling salesman with a difference arrives in a very small, very quiet town. He is a seller of smoke – which on the face of it is a pretty useless product if you buy it floating around free, but in this case it is quite a life changing force full of magic – at least for a while.
The main thing to say about this Spanish short film is that it is very impressive in terms of the animation and design. It really has the feel and look of a Pixar film. By this I do not mean to suggest that nobody outside of America could possible achieve such a film, but it is important to know that the production company listed on IMDb (PrimerFrame) is actually an arts college, not a billion dollar studio, so not only should you be impressed by the animation because of how good it is, but you should also be impressed by it because of where it came from in terms of the bigger picture.
This side is fine and it is a shame then that the initially intriguing short didn't do more for me in terms of content. It has some amusing moments and the plot is built on magic and wonder, but it really didn't deliver too much to get excited about and I thought it could have been funnier, punchier and more interesting – for sure if it had been as good as the animation it would have been a very enjoyable short film. As it is, it is still technically very impressive and reasonably amusing, but the content is not as good as the look.
