Hurricane Sandy, unofficially referred to as Superstorm Sandy, came on-land near Brigantine, New Jersey on October 29, 2012, as a post-tropical cyclone with hurricane-force winds. The storm surge hit New York City and flooded streets, tunnels and subway lines and cut power in and around the city. The Atlantic Ocean storm surge also caused considerable flood damage to homes, buildings, roadways, boardwalks and mass transit facilities in low-lying coastal areas of the outer boroughs of Queens, Brooklyn and Staten Island. It was the deadliest, the most destructive, and the strongest hurricane of the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season. The storm caused close to $70 billion in damage overall and killed 160 people in the US alone.
