Peter Berg to direct two new shows this upcoming season

According to Entertainment Weekly director and actor Peter Berg (Friday Night Lights, The Kingdom) is set to direct and produce an HBO pilot based on the 2011 Tom Perrotta novel The Leftovers. The show will be written by Damon Lindelof (Lost). The show will center on a group of people in a suburban town who must deal with the disappearance of over a hundred people in their own community after the Rapture. Berg’s producing partner Sarah Aubrey will also serve as executive producer on the pilot as well as the series.

The Leftovers will mark the second show this upcoming season that Berg is directing and producing. Bloodline is set to air on NBC and follows an orphaned girl caught between two families of mercenaries and killers. The show is being billed as a pulp action thriller. 'Friday Night Lights' creator Peter Berg to direct, produce HBO pilot penned by Damon Lindelof

The creative minds of Friday Night Lights and Lost are teaming up.

Peter Berg, best known for showrunning Friday Night Lights and directing last year’s Battleship, will produce and direct an HBO pilot written by Damon Lindelof (Lost, Prometheus), EW has confirmed. The show is an adaptation of 2011 novel The Leftovers by Tom Perrotta, who is writing the pilot script along with Lindelof.

The Leftovers is a depiction of the Rapture (or the Sudden Departure, as the book calls it), focusing on the people of suburban Mapleton who are dealing with the disappearance of over a hundred people in their own small community. »

Peter Berg has closed a deal  to direct Damon Lindelof’s HBO drama pilot The Leftovers based on Tom Perrotta’s 2011 book. In addition, Berg and his producing partner, Sarah Aubrey, will serve as executive producers on the pilot as well as the series, should it go forward, alongside Lindelof, Perrotta, Ron Yerxa and Albert Berger. The project, co-written by Lindelof and Perrotta, takes place after the Rapture happens but not quite like it’s supposed to. It is the story of the people who didn’t make the cut… and a world that will never be the same. The pilot is produced by Warner Bros. TV where Lindelof, who will serve as showrunner on Leftovers, is under a rich overall deal. Berg, who also is directing and exec producing the NBC pilot Bloodline, is with Wme. »

The formula for a winning new comedy, CBS hopes.

Deadline confirms that former Private Practice actor Paul Adelstein has been cast opposite soon-to-be-former Smash actress Debra Messing on an upcoming single-camera comedy.

From producers from Julie Rottenberg and Elisa Zuritsky and based on the Israeli series Mother’s Day, the untitled series will focus on a Messing's married mom attempting to have it all: family, work, a social life.

Adelstein will portray the main character's husband, a Google employee who isn't aware of how nightly his wife is struggling.

Other Private Practice alums who have found work for the fall, if their projects get picked up, include: KaDee Strickland in NBC's Bloodline; and Taye Diggs in TNT’s Murder in the First, a drama from Stephen Bochco.  »

In what would be his first series regular role, Kenneth Choi (Sons Of Anarchy, Glee, 24) has been cast in NBC’s drama pilot Ironside, a reboot of the 1967 series. Written by Mike Caleo and directed by Peter Horton, it centers on Robert T. Ironside (Blair Underwood), a tough, sexy and acerbic police detective relegated to a wheelchair after a shooting who is hardly limited by his disability as he pushes and prods his hand-picked team to solve the most difficult cases. Choi will play Captain Ed Rollins, Ironside’s supervisor. Despite their push/pull relationship Ed and Ironside have a tremendous amount of respect and admiration for each other. "Bloodline" is about a young orphan named Bird (Skyler Samuels) who is torn between two feuding families full of murderers and mercenaries. In order to break her curse, Bird must find and kill her own mother.

Zylka plays Troy, a man who was taken from his parents and into a life of battle. For most of his youth, he has been raised in the Spartan agoge, where he has been taught to withstand excruciating pain. It’s pilot season, which means your favorite out-of-work TV actors, actresses, creators and writers are getting a chance to return to the small screen once more.

Although we have yet to know what new series we’ll see next year, the networks have been busy selecting projects to consider for their schedules. So far, almost 100 scripts have been chosen, and audiences will only get to see a handful actually come to fruition.

Several are duds, but there are a few promising prospects that I hope network executives will keep around for the 2013-2014 season — even if it means they have to cancel old favorites to make room (just keep Parks and Recreation, Ok, NBC?).

Jonathan Banks, best known as "Breaking Bad's' Mike Ehrmantraut, has a new TV gig.

The actor has been cast on NBC's drama pilot "Bloodline" as the dangerous Leo Killpriest, the patriarch of a family with a history of killers, according to TVLine.

"Bloodline," which has been compared to "Kill Bill," follows an orphan named Bird Benson, who's stuck between two families -- one of murderers and the other of mercenaries.
