'The Face Reader' Shines at South Korea’s Dae Jong Film Awards

Seoul — The Face Reader won Best Film among a total six prizes at 50th Dae Jong (Grand Bell) Film Awards, South Korea’s equivalent of the Oscars. Miracle in Cell No. 7 and Snowpiercer also grabbed multiple awards. The period drama by Han Jae-rim was originally nominated for 11 categories, and won Best Director, Actor (Song Kang-ho shared the prize with Miracle in Cell No. 7’s Ryu Seung-ryong), Supporting Actor (Jo Jung-suk), Costume Design (Shim Hyeon-seob), and Popularity (Lee Jung-jae). Korean Films Top 100 Million Mark

Busan — Korean-made movies have sold 100 million tickets so far this year in South Korea. That is a rare achievement, reached in record time.

The symbolic landmark was passed on Friday, the second day of the current Busan International Film Festival, it was confirmed by the Korean Film Council (Kofic). By the end of the weekend the total had swelled to 100.6 million, worth $662 million (KRW720 billion).

Data from Kobis, Kofic’s box office data service, shows total ticket sales of 165.6 million in the first nine months of this year. That is an increase of more than 22.6 million compared with the first three quarters of 2012.

The 100 million figure was also achieved in last year, but 47 days later. By the end of 2012 Korean films had sold an all-time record of 114 million tickets.

The data also shows that Korean films have held 60% of their local market worth $1.12 billion to date.
