‘Alias Grace’ Review

On paper, Netflix’s newest original series, Alias Grace, appears to be another product of Seo and word cloud analysis:

“People watch period pieces like Downtown Abby and fiction based on true crime.”

“Hulu had a big hit with adapting a Margaret Atwood book!”

Women Behind Bars and Killer Women both get lots of hits among a key demo.”

Regardless if the methods for generating content like House of Cards and Stranger Things are stomach churning, the results are generally enjoyable. Alias Grace, based on Atwood’s fictionalized examination of the Irish immigrant at the center of a historical 19th-century murder, is no exception.

While a narrative primarily organized around the psychiatric evaluation (think In Treatment) of the increasingly troubled life of a young servant in Victorian Ontario may not be promising, the result is cooly intoxicating. Anchored by Sarah Gadon’s subtle performance as Grace Marks, and punctuated by stabs of del Toro-esque imagery,

ABC's Tuesday 'Death Slot': A Brief History of Its Put-Upon Occupants
No amount of Inhuman powers could have helped Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. evade its Season 4 ratings erosion, seeing as it now calls ABC’s most problematic time slot home.

For while CBS’ Sundays-at-10 (or 10:30-ish!) time slot is no picnic, and any number of dramas have capped NBC’s Thursday line-up over the years, ABC’s Tuesdays-at-10 “death slot” has earned a notorious nickname that even the casual viewer likely knows.

All told, S.H.I.E.L.D. is the ninth drama to claim that spot since September 2011, when

TV Q: Are Cancelled Favorites Actually 'Replaced by Reality-tv'? (Answer: No)
Hey, we all want someone to blame when something goes awry. And at this time every year, consumers of TV are quick to carp that their favorite scripted show — be it Limitless, The Family or Game of Silence — got cancelled “because of reality-tv.” The numbers, however, indicate that unscripted fare is no longer TV’s go-to filler, and thus no longer a proper scapegoat.

'Scandal' delay leaves ABC's fall schedule without all-Shonda Thursday
Say goodbye to ABC's all-Shonda Thursday lineup — at least until midseason. Kerry Washington's pregnancy has delayed (and shortened) the next season of Scandal, which means the schedule ABC announced today will be the first in a few years featuring a show not produced by Shonda Rhimes airing on that night in the fall. In this case, it's Notorious with Piper Perabo, one of two new ABC legal dramas whose descriptions in the press release includes the word "sexy," just in case we weren't clear on the branding. On the whole, ABC's schedule has many more changes, and more new shows, than either the NBC schedule or Fox schedule announced earlier in upfront week. Among the shifts: with Castle done for, ABC will have a new post-Dancing with the Stars drama — Conviction with Hayley Atwell (the other "sexy" legal show) — for the first time in years; Agents of Shield

‘Of Kings and Prophets’ Latest Casualty of ABC’s Tuesday-at-10 Death Slot

‘Of Kings and Prophets’ Latest Casualty of ABC’s Tuesday-at-10 Death Slot
Every network, it seems, has a bugaboo time period on its schedule, and for ABC it clearly is the final hour of primetime on Tuesday.

The longtime home of one of the Alphabet’s most successful and acclaimed dramas ever, “NYPD Blue,” Tuesday-at-10 in recent years has been a turnstile of, well, turkeys. In many cases, these shows were off-brand, and given the network’s overall struggles earlier on the night and its lack of a Tuesday identity, it seemed like the only place on the schedule for programmers to slot them.

Of Kings and Prophets” was originally scheduled to air Sundays at 10 p.m. last fall, but the network ended up pulling and then retooling the biblical drama, replacing it with “Quantico.” When “Kings” did finally air, odds seemed stacked against it, and its new intended timeslot of Tuesday at 10 only seemed to hasten the inevitable. Beginning next Tuesday, March 22, Shark Tank offshoot Beyond The Tank will take over the 10 Pm Tuesday time slot for the remainder of the season. Of Kings and Prophets has become the latest ABC casualty in the hour. The list of previous ABC dramas that quickly crashed in Tuesday 10 Pm hour include Lucky 7, Killer Women, Mind Games and, most…

ABC Slays ‘Of Kings and Prophets’ After Just Two Episodes

ABC Slays ‘Of Kings and Prophets’ After Just Two Episodes
ABC has yanked freshman series “Of Kings and Prophets” from its schedule, Variety has learned. The cancellation comes after just two very low-rated episodes have aired.

The biblical drama premiered March 8 to a 0.8 rating in adults 18-49 and 3.3 million viewers overall, falling off this week to an even lower 0.5 in the demo with just 2.4 million viewers.

The time slot left vacant by “Of Kings and Prophets” will be occupied by “Shark Tank’s” companion series “Beyond the Tank” starting next Tuesday, March 22, at 10 p.m.

The Tuesday 10 p.m. time slot has been troubled for ABC. Last November, the dark 1980s set drama “Wicked City” opened with a 0.9, fell to a 0.7 and was then pulled after hitting a minuscule 0.4 in its third outing. Previously, the slot had been home to “Forever,” which did okay, but was not renewed for a second season; “Killer Women”( in 2014), which was pulled after just

Tuesday Ratings: NBC’s ‘Chicago Fire’ Douses ‘Person of Interest,’ ‘Forever’ Finales
In a result that doesn’t bode well for its future, on-the-bubble CBS veteran drama “Person of Interest” hit a season low in its finale Tuesday night, tying with ABC’s modestly performing freshman drama “Forever” — with both shows finishing well behind NBC’s hot “Chicago Fire.” CBS fared better leading off the night with “NCIS,” which edged out NBC’s fading “The Voice” as Tuesday’s top draw among young adults.

NBC and CBS tied for the night’s lead in adults 18-49, with the Eye winning easily in total viewers.

According to preliminary national estimates from Nielsen, “NCIS” averaged a 2.0 rating/7 share in adults 18-49 and 14.2 million viewers overall in the 8 o’clock hour, matching the show’s season low set with its prior two originals. The drama, which wraps its 12th season next week, was Tuesday’s No. 1 show in 18-49, 25-54 and total viewers.
