- In London, 1938, Ian Fleming is a dissolute playboy, eclipsed by his dead war hero father and successful brother. While propping up the bar at a jazz club, he meets Ann O'Neill, an alluring socialite. Unlike many of his conquests, Ann is more than a match for him. She already has a husband and a lover, Esmond Rothermere. Fleming finds solace in the arms of a beautiful dispatch rider named Muriel. Following a frosty morning-after encounter with Muriel, Fleming's domineering mother secures him a job assisting Naval Intelligence's Admiral John Godfrey. He quickly incurs Godfrey's wrath when he cooks up an unorthodox scheme to get information from two captured German submariners. However, Fleming's valuable findings make it apparent that an imaginative approach could be just what the war effort requires.—BBC America
- Ian Fleming hasn't been much of a success so far in life, at least in the eyes of his demanding mother. He works as a financial adviser and lives in the shadow of his brother Paul, a successful writer. It's the summer of 1939 and his mother arranges through her friend Winston Churchill for Fleming to receive some type of appointment to the Royal Navy. He's appointed as assistant to Admiral John Godfrey, Director of Naval Intelligence and soon shows some flair for the work they have to do. His private life is a mess however. He drinks and smokes too much and is always short of money. He also has his eye on a married woman, Ann O'Neil.—garykmcd
- Since their father's death, firstborn Peter Fleming, an officer and gentleman, is haughty mother Evelyn's pride and joy, unlike brother Ian, an unruly playboy whose nightlife invariably ends up with bruises and broken professional aspirations. After losing his aristocratic only investment client, black sheep Ian can't afford to turn down an offer to be recruited, at Churchill's personal recommendation for the family's sake, as assistant to admiral John Godfrey, the director of Naval Intelligence, whom he impressed in between womanizing and intoxication by his daring unorthodox approach to obtain vital information from Nazi fleet officers.—KGF Vissers
