Tedious

Warning: Spoilers
This is the issue I have with stories that span over seasons, they become tedious, one murder - amazingly everyone seems to be involved for a girl who hasn't been on the island for years, no-one wants to come forward with any information, like the sister in law. Seen the victim on the day of her murder but doesn't come forward for the poorest of reasons. Throw in red herrings (the drug side issue) which seems unconnected but tiringly will continue to be connected. It'll turn out to be the brother probably who had an issue with her when they were 10 and all the side stories will be pointless. This story isn't strong enough to span the season. It could have been a tight 3/4 parter.

Slow Challening drama

Warning: Spoilers
It seems this mystery has become a boring and uninteresting - a challenge to watch. The protagonist Tosh is a slow dim witted young officer. Losing Perez has burdened this show with less than interesting characters. The magic of the shetlands landscape and sea visuals redeem it to some degree. Otherwise this is a waste of time. It's lacks charisma the officers are dry dim witted and stumble throgh the dialogues. This show is like a bad soap in a country setting with a few superstitious old Nordic world beliefs thrown into the fray. It could have explored more city urban scenes of the bad layers who killed the girl. Or the drug trade in the shetlands, rather it tried to explore old flames of the visiting officer.

Make a flow chart
amazibobcorr11 January 2024
There are so many characters referenced in various dialogs, what seems like two dozen, one needs a flow chart to keep track of who is doing what to whom. This seems to be the formula when writers can no longer come up with plots with any originality, so red herrings and large numbers of suspects create the needed confusion to hide that shortcoming. At this point I don't even think I will invest the time for the last two episodes.

In trying to decide how to proceed, I'm looking at the plot summaries on Wikipedia and the character list on IMDB, to put together a mental picture of where we are at this point.

Not worth watching

This series is such a disappointment.

There are so many sub plots that go nowhere. A character is introduced who seems is going to be important to the show and then they just disappear.

Shetland was always about false leads but there was always a central thread.

The writers seem to have no idea of how to craft a compelling and intriguing narrative. It is so different to what we have come to expect from Shetland.

It reminds me of what happened to the last series of New Tricks.

They took something that was hugely popular and wanted to trade off the name and characters without putting the work in.

Parts of the dialogue is just completely stupid.
