The movie was originally going to be titled Hot Tub Time Machine 3 as a joke about the time travel but the studio would not allow that, claiming it would be too confusing.
The film's budget is significantly lower than the first film due to John Cusack's absence, who had a larger salary than his former co-stars.
The original release date was scheduled for Christmas of 2014 but, after The Interview (2014) was moved to that date by Sony, it was moved to February 20th, 2015 to avoid competition.
When Lou tries to hit Chevy Chase with a golf putter when they first arrive in the future Chevy says "na nana na nana na" which is a reference to his 1980s film Caddyshack.
The film shows a future version of The Daily Show (1996). Rob Corddry (Lou) and Jason Jones (Gary Winkle) are former members of The Daily Show.
Chevy Chase, Rob Corddry and Gillian Jacobs all appeared in 'Community'.
This is the first time Chevy Chase and Gillian Jacobs worked together since "Community"
The tattoo on Lou's arm says Motley Lou a reference to the first film in which Lou joins and renames the rock band Mötley Crüe.

Jessica Williams is shown to be the host of "The Daily Show" in 2025. In reality, host Jon Stewart announced his departure in 2015, with Trevor Noah as his replacement.

The trivia items below may give away important plot points.

John Cusack appears in a cameo at the end of the unrated cut. He's absent from the theatrical version.
In the first film Lou says, "If I wanted to kill myself, I'd fucking kill myself. I'd be awesome at it. A shotgun to the dick." By going into the future and having sex with Adam's wife, Lou inadvertently fulfilled his statement given that his actions resulted in Adam Jr. going back into time and killing him by the aforementioned method.
