A Personal Chronicle in the Face of a Divisive Time
EUyeshima26 March 2023
Filmmaker Mark Mannucci followed his subject for 23 months starting in January 2021 right after the insurrection at the Capitol, a touchstone as the two-hour documentary highlights the divisiveness of the country. Perspectives on Fauci as either savior or opportunist are captured with acuity, but what Mannucci does well is show how he faced the challenges of playing his dual role as chief medical advisor to the President and the head of NIAID. We are reminded how critical he was in the AIDS/HIV movement and how that firestorm prepared him as much and as little as it could for COVID. No major surprises here, but the personal insight is invaluable, for example, a relaxing reunion with AIDS activists who previously reviled him.
