Stream the Season Premiere of Showtime's Bloody Good 'Penny Dreadful' Now

21 April 2015 10:38 AM, PDT | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

John Logan's "Penny Dreadful" is a witchy brew of Victorian hysteria, a mutant gothic inspired by Wilde and Shelley and stuffed with malevolently kooky spooks. Less everything-but-the-kitchen-sink than FX's "American Horror Story," the first season boasted superb visuals and cinematic subtly despite the crazy "anything goes" drama that unfolds. Ahead of its May 3 premiere on Showtime, stream the season 2 premiere, which already looks to be aggressively scary, silly and insane. For fans of extreme female performances, check out Eva Green's gotta-see-it turn as the elegant and chilly Vanessa Ives. Read More: Get Ready or Showtime's Supernatural Chiller "Penny Dreadful" »

Showtime Releases Penny Dreadful and Happyish Premieres Online Ahead of Launch

20 April 2015 12:42 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

As is their wont, Showtime has released the first full episodes from the new season of Penny Dreadful as well as the new series HAPPYish before their official premieres. The episodes are scrubbed of nudity (although the HAPPYish episode on YouTube requires an age verification, though I'm assuming it's for language), but Showtime is hoping that the sneak peeks of the drama (or comedy, as the case may be) will get you hooked. For those who are already Penny Dreadful fans, though, it's just a bonus look at the upcoming second season, which will premiere Sunday, May 3rd at 10 p.m. The series, which was a surprise breakout hit last year, follows some familiar characters from Victorian horror literature (and some new ones), but explores their supernatural plights in new ways. Penny Dreadful stars Eva Green, Josh Hartnett, Timothy Dalton, Harry Treadaway, and Rory Kinnear (in a fan-favorite role). The Showtime series Penny Dreadful, written and created by John Logan, breathes life into some of classic horror’s most iconic characters. So while we wait patiently for the second series, Sharon Gosling delights us with a wonderful companion book.

The show is set between reality and the supernatural with a cast of incredible talent that includes the likes of Josh Hartnett, Timothy Dalton and Eva Green. The show cleverly weaves together stories of original characters Sir Malcolm Murray, Ethan Chandler and Vanessa Ives with literary figures; Doctor Victor Frankenstein, Dorian Gray and figures from Dracula. Why Josh Hartnett Said No To Christopher Nolan's Batman

17 April 2015 9:16 AM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Before Christian Bale donned the black cape and mask to become Christopher Nolan.s Dark Knight, there were a bevy of actors up for the role. Even our current Superman, Henry Cavill, made it to the final round of auditions, along with Jake Gyllenhaal, Cillian Murphy and Hugh Dancy. Josh Hartnett was apparently also in the mix, but unlike the other candidates, he made the fatal error of turning down the now iconic part.  The Penny Dreadful star recently spoke with Playboy for an interview, during which he revealed the understandable but unfortunate reason for saying no.  The intensity of my sudden fame was overwhelming for me, and in the middle of that, I felt I couldn.t trust any new person I met or their motives. I spent a lot of time back home in Minnesota with my friends and family. I did smaller movies, and I stopped working »

Josh Hartnett Regrets Turning Down Batman Role in Batman Begins

17 April 2015 4:30 AM, PDT | WorstPreviews.com | See recent Worst Previews news »

Josh Hartnett was a major star at one point with lots of top directors attempting to attach the actor to their projects. Unfortunately, Hartnett was getting tired of making movies and tired for being known only for blockbusters. Now that Hartnett is getting his career back on track, he is realizing that he made lots of mistakes when he was younger. One of those mistakes was turning down Christopher Nolan's offer to play Batman in "Batman Begins." "I've definitely said 'no' to some of the wrong people. I said no because I was tired and wanted to spend more time with my friends and family. That's frowned upon in this industry. People don't like being told 'no.' I don't like it," he said. "I learned my lesson when Christopher Nolan and I talked about Batman. I decided it wasn't for me. Then he didn't want to put me in 'The Prestige. »

Josh Hartnett Says He Regrets Turning Down Batman Offer From Christopher Nolan

Even the biggest movie stars have career regrets. At least, that’s what Josh Hartnett revealed in an interview with Playboy when he admitted that he turned down an offer from Christopher Nolan to play Batman in his superhero reboot.

“I’ve definitely said no to some of the wrong people,” Hartnett told the magazine. “I learned my lesson when Christopher Nolan and I talked about Batman. I decided it wasn’t for me. Then he didn’t want to put me in ‘The Prestige.’ They not only hired their Batman for it, they also hired my girlfriend (Scarlett Johansson) at the time.”

Hartnett went on to explain that he didn’t reject the offer due to any beef with Nolan, whom he describes as “incredibly cool and very talented,” but that his decision was a result of his resistance to being boxed in as only a blockbuster star. The »

Book Review: ‘The Art and Making of Penny Dreadful’

Written by Sharon Gosling | Published by Titan Books | Format: Hardback, 176pp

When a show like Penny Dreadful merges a historical setting with a fantastical dark world where anything is possible – to make this believable, but still add the level of the surreal that is required, there has to be a set vision and an artistic style that can connect with what the audience expects and what works on-screen.  In The Art and Making of Penny Dreadful by Sharon Gosling, we see just what it took to create such a unique show and create that connection with the fans.

Impressively The Art and Making of Penny Dreadful isn’t just a book that shows pretty pictures from the show and some words to create the context of what we are seeing.  With comments from the cast and the makers of the show we are given a look into the dark world of Penny Dreadful. »
