The Nation's Favourite Christmas Song
21 September 2013 | by See all my reviews

I watched the documentary programmes celebrating the twenty five best songs of ABBA and Bee Gees, the greatest dance moments, and the greatest number ones from the last sixty years, and I was looking forward to the results of this Christmas themed countdown documentary programme. Every Christmas there are seasonal themed songs that are played on the radio and available to buy or download on compilations and online, and this programme counts down the twenty most popular Christmas songs (no Christmas carols), all chosen and voted for by the public. The listed Christmas songs are: "Lonely This Christmas" - Mud, "Mistletoe and Wine" - Cliff Richard, "Mary's Boy Child / Oh My Lord" - Boney M., "Blue Christmas" - Elvis Presley, "Peace On Earth/Little Drummer Boy" - Bing Crosby & David Bowie, "Wonderful Christmas Time" - Paul McCartney, "The Christmas Song (Merry Christmas to You)" - Nat King Cole Trio, "Walking in the Air" - Aled Jones, "Driving Home for Christmas" - Chris Rea, "When a Child Is Born" - Johnny Mathis, "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)" - John & Yoko & The Plastic Ono Band with The Harlem Community Choir, "I Believe in Father Christmas" - Greg Lake, "Last Christmas" - Wham!, "Stop the Cavalry" - Jona Lewie, "Do They Know It's Christmas?" - Band Aid, "All I Want for Christmas Is You" - Mariah Carey, "White Christmas" - Bing Crosby, "Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!" - Dean Martin, "Merry Xmas Everybody" - Slade, "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday" - Wizzard, and deserved number one "Fairytale of New York" - The Pogues featuring Kirsty MacColl. Other Christmas songs mentioned were "Step into Christmas" - Elton, "2000 Miles" - The Pretenders, "Wombling Merry Christmas" - The Wombles, "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town" - Michael Bublé, "I Have a Dream" - Westlife, "Somethin' Stupid" - Robbie Williams & Nicole Kidman, "2 Become 1" - Spice Girls, "The Power of Love" - Frankie Goes to Hollywood, "Santa Baby" - Kylie Minogue, "Mistletoe" - Justin Bieber, "It Must Be Santa" - Bob Dylan, "Merry Christmas Everyone" - Shaking' Stevens and "Stay Another Day" - East 17. Narrated by Liza Tarbuck, with contributions from Howard Blake, Emma Bunton, Alexandra Burke, Melanie 'Mel C' Chisholm, Mary Crosby (Bing's daughter), Paul Gambaccini, Noddy Holder, Katherine Jenkins, Aled Jones, Greg Lake, Jona Lewie, Jean MacColl (Kirsty's mother), Shane MacGowan, Johnny Mathis, Boney M.'s Liz Mitchell, Yoko Ono, Chris Rea, Sir Cliff Richard, Midge Ure, Roy Wood and Paul Young. Very good!
