"Our eyes in space", 7 July 2013
Author: evening1 from New York City

I found this episode of the excellent NOVA series pretty to look at but overly long and unfocused.

It attempts to show what Earth-observing satellites circling the planet at distances of 500 miles are telling us about our climate.

Yet when I stepped outside into the suffocating summer heat of New York City after watching it I wasn't able to explain to myself why it felt so damned hot! Something about the sun hitting the equator?

This segment discusses topics like why Antarctica is 49 degrees colder than the North Pole, how the oceans' temperature has gone up a half-degree in the last 30 years, and why Category-5 Hurricane Katrina may be a sign of violent mega storms to come.

At two hours in length, there is far too much to absorb here but the messages are important and it can't hurt to try.
