In a banner week for new releases, the five top-selling discs on the national homevideo sales charts for the week ending July 19 are all newcomers that hit stores the previous Tuesday, the designated day when new product is put on display.
Twentieth Century Fox’s “The Longest Ride,” a romantic drama with $37.5 million in theatrical earnings, debuted at No. 1. Based on the Nicholas Sparks book, the film follows a young couple whose lives change after meeting an older man who was in a car crash, as he reflects on his own past romance.
Bowing at No. 2 was the comedy “Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2,” a sequel to the 2009 cult hit from Sony Pictures. The original grossed $146.3 million and generated quite a buzz with its Segway-riding antihero and his laughable misadventures. The sequel earned $70.7 million theaters.

In a move that would seem to scream heresy to those who worship at the altar of Hollywood, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel director John Madden has effectively killed talk of a third installment, despite the financial success of the first two films.
“I would douse any expectations of [a third film] right now,” Madden is quoted as saying by The Sydney Confidential column of the Daily Telegraph. Madden explained that directing The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel was in of itself a total shock and that the advanced age of many of the films’ core cast members would make any third installment even more troublesome.
“Both Judi [Dench] and Maggie [Smith] are aged over 80 now and many of the others are not that far behind and it is a tough place,” said Madden. “You’re dealing with tremendous heat, a lot of chaos and noise, and things that are difficult to control. These are »

The Sydney Confidential column of the Daily Telegraph has quoted Madden as saying “I would douse any expectations of [a third film] right now”, stating that he hadn’t even expected to direct a sequel. Madden also pointed out that his aging cast was making future films difficult.

As the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel has only a single remaining vacancy – posing a rooming predicament for two fresh arrivals – Sonny pursues his expansionist dream of opening a second hotel.
This sequel to John Madden’s 2011 hit The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel had few requirements to fulfill. Of most importance, the stellar cast from the first film returned in force, bolstered by a handful of bright, new faces. The largely-British ensemble cast, extensively listed above, features actors whom it is a simple pleasure to watch. Bill Nighy (Pride) is a perennial charmer, and his relationship with the delightful Dame Judi Dench (Philomena) is only a recipe for success. The screen is stolen by »

From January through the end of June, 2015, there have been 73 films that have had wide releases in the United States. (This list includes some films that opened at the very end of December 2014 and so had the vast majority of their runs in 2015. It also includes some awards bait that opened in limited release in late 2014 but didn’t open wide until early 2015. These figures also mostly apply to Canada, but there may have been some Canada-only wide releases that I am not aware of and don’t have access to.) These films are, in rough order of release:

Richard Gere has enjoyed — and is still enjoying — the sort of hugely successful, long, eclectic career that nearly every actor would kill for. Gere started gathering serious attention in Terrence Malick’s “Days of Heaven” in 1978, but it was his role as the titular “American Gigolo” in Paul Schrader’s now-iconic 1980 film that vaulted him to Hollywood stardom. He went on to sweep Debra Winger off her feet in “An Officer and a Gentleman,” and saved Julia Roberts from a life of prostitution in “Pretty Woman” (reteaming later with Roberts on “Runaway Bride”). Gere tackled song and dance with “The Cotton Club” and “Chicago,” danced around the law as a corrupt cop in “Internal Affairs” and donned armor as Lancelot in “First Knight.” More recently, he’s walked on the seamier side of Wall Street (“Arbitrage”) and stayed over at “The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.”

Visit Facebook.com/BridgeOfSpies tomorrow at 9Am Pst to watch the new trailer.
A dramatic thriller set against the backdrop of a series of historic events, DreamWorks Pictures/Fox 2000 Pictures’ Bridge Of Spies tells the story of James Donovan, a Brooklyn lawyer who finds himself thrust into the center of the Cold War when the CIA sends him on the near-impossible task to negotiate the release of a captured American U-2 pilot.
Screenwriters Matt Charman and Ethan Coen & Joel Coen have woven this remarkable experience in Donovan’s life into a story inspired by true events that captures the essence of a man who risked everything and vividly brings his personal journey to life.

There is very little to discuss in terms of new releases this week, especially since I haven't seen the two new Costa-Gravas titles or Rainer Werner Fassbinder title from Criterion, which lead off the "Even More" section below. I have, however, updated the upcoming release schedule with several new titles including Ex Machina, the "Rogue Cut" of X-Men: Days of Future Past, Insurgent and Slow West. Hopefully there's something that catches your eye. The Loft I never saw this, but the way Universal treated it pretty much said all I needed to know. Then I talked to someone that did see it and I know to stay away for good.
Seventh Son This one I did see and it is quite the trainwreck.

Tina Desai, who was recently seen in Hollywood film The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, plays a scientist in Sense8, a new American sci-fi series from the Wachowskis, whose trailer released lately.
Tina confirms, "Yes I play a scientist from Mumbai, who is also a strong believer of God. My character has a good paradox. I play someone who strongly follows science as well as firmly believes in God."
Much like Tina, Bollywood actresses Priyanka Chopra and Nimrat Kaur are also part of Us shows 'Quantico' and 'Homeland' respectively. Ask Tina about this new trend in the industry, where actresses are readily doing TV shows based in abroad and the pretty petite says, "I just don't know about it being a trend. It's great that Priyanka and other actresses are also taking up such projects. But I am really glad that I got this opportunity. I think it's just matter »
