[first lines]
Preston Monk: Good morning, ladies. I trust you are prepared for another day serving at Eaton and Company, Canada's greatest store. Now remember, you are ladies serving ladies. Which means, Miss Richardson, no loafing behind the counter, no engaging in idle chatter. Isn't that right?
Helen Richardson: Yes, Mister Monk.
Preston Monk: Miss Richardson, the ladies of Rosedale do not want to be served by a cow chewing her cud.
[he holds out a hankerchief, and she spits out a wad of gum]
Preston Monk: And as for the rest of you, I implore you to refrain from using common familiarities. Our esteemed customers to not wish to be referred to as 'Dearie', and please, no 'heaven help me' looks exchanged while serving. What do I expect at all times?
Pearl Redmond: Decorum, Mister Monk. We are Mister Timothy's ambassadors.
Preston Monk: Day-cor-um. Thank you, Miss Redmond. Miss Sykes. Your services will no longer be required.
Florence Sykes: Sir, I can't afford not to work; why are you firing me?
Preston Monk: You know perfectly well. I don't make the rules; I merely follow them. Collect your wages on your way out.
Florence Sykes: Pompous prig.
[to Helen]
Florence Sykes: What are you staring at?
Helen Richardson: Flo, I'm very sorry...
Florence Sykes: Save your sympathies, Helen. Monk'll get his one of these days.
With this episode, we have a variety of possible suspects with various motives. One of the suspects even seems to get the upper hand over Murdoch!
The only downside is the Dr. Ogden subplot, but I've decided not to rate episodes poorly anymore just because the writers insist on continuing with this abominable plot line. I had really hoped they would get rid of Julia. I've disliked her character since the first episode, and the dislike has only grown with every season. And I'm incredibly annoyed that Murdoch continues to be attracted to her for some reason. The person you love should make you a better person, not worse. There is nothing romantic about the relationship between Murdoch and Julia, and it seems in fact to be a rather destructive relationship.
I definitely recommend this episode, but be prepared for further frustration with the Murdoch/Julia story arc.
